King Benjamin's Farewell Speech -by Gary Kapp

Mosiah 2:16 Behold, I say unto you that because I said unto you that I had spent my days in your service, I do not desire to boast, for I have only been in the service of God.
17 And behold, I tell you these things that ye may learn wisdom; that ye may learn that when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.
18 Behold, ye have called me your king; and if I, whom ye call your king, do labor to serve you, then ought not ye to labor to serve one another?
19 And behold also, if I, whom ye call your king, who has spent his days in your service, and yet has been in the service of God, do merit any thanks from you, O how you ought to thank your heavenly King! (emphasis added)
Service To Mankind is Certainly Something which Is emphasized by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as you have discovered from a good number of my blog posts. This post (40n) is one of them. (Please see Posts: 25; 39r; 39p; and 39q.)

I think you will be able to discover much more about the great amount of service that has been rendered and is still being rendered by that Church from an LDS Church News Article that I have inserted into this blog post. After all, as you can discern from the Book of Mormon scripture above, SERVICE TO THOSE IN NEED is a paramount doctrine of that Church, the church in which I attempt to devotedly serve!

From The authorized News Web site of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints I have copied the following:

Humanitarian Efforts

As disciples of Jesus Christ, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints strive to follow the Savior’s admonition to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, take in the stranger, clothe the naked, and visit the sick and those in prison (see Matthew 25:35–36).

The Church sponsors humanitarian relief and development projects around the world that benefit those of other faiths. These projects include emergency relief assistance in times of disaster and programs that strengthen the self-reliance of individuals, families, and communities.

Hundreds of full-time Church volunteers with skills and experience in education, agriculture, social work, business, and medicine serve throughout the world take part in these humanitarian projects.

The Church conducts humanitarian activities worldwide. From 1985 to 2007 LDS Humanitarian Services provided more than $1.01 billion in total assistance to needy individuals in 165 countries.

Thousands of members in Central America were left reeling from a two-fisted combo of natural disasters that killed hundreds, destroyed homes by the thousands and prompted a ongoing LDS Church humanitarian response.

TODAY'S THEME

The Salt Lake City, Utah Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
The Post for Today Was chosen by me, Neil Birch, from the New BLOG INDEX I first published several days ago. (Instructions for the General Accessing of that blog are given near the end of this and all future posts.)

Because of all of the time it has been taking me to put each of the blog post links in place alphabetically in the new Blog Index, (and I've still got more of those to put in place) I haven't had the time to put together a new post for today. Therefore, I decided to have you experience one of my earlier blog posts, Post 17, first published on Thursday, August 7, 2008. That was long enough ago so that most of you readers may not then have even heard of this blog. It is unlikely that you would have even found that post without having a Blog Index to assist you.
Your experience now will give you a further opportunity of using the new Blog Index.

If you have, by some means accessed that post before, I think you will enjoy reviewing it again. I feel good whenever I view it. I hope you too will benefit from viewing it, be it for the first time or a repeat!

It has always been possible for readers of this blog to access my past blog posts, but it took more time than it should have because it wasn't possible before to search for specific topics you might have been interested in. I hope that each of you will find This Blog Index very useful in your efforts to gain new insights into the Gospel of Jesus Christ as taught in both the Bible and in the Book of Mormon by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Lord Jesus Christ has seen to it that His Church has been re-established on the earth beginning on April 6, 1830 in the State of New York, in the United States of America.

This Blog continues forward and I hope to cover many additional inspiring and enlightening subjects for your benefit.

Occasionally in the past I have modified and then reposted a number of my older posts to make them more interesting in case readers had read the first version. I have chosen not to do that this time.

I just read again the post I have decided to link you to, and I feel very good about having you access it. I really enjoyed writing the post you very soon could be reading!
Now, although I have given some links from my new Blog Post Index in the past two posts to let You see how it works, I've never yet, until now, substituted viewing a post from the past by having you access it directly from the Index Blog.
When finding myself trying to decide which painting or photo to use for this blog post, I finally decided to use a diferent version of the same subject's photo that you will see at the beginning of the past post of mine which I will be suggesting below you link with.

I have included below several other post links that are listed in my Blog Index just above the one I have chosen just so you could form a better mental picture of what the Index looks like:

I hope the message of Post 17 strengthened your faith in the Truthfulness of the Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ! I appreciate your readership and very much hope you you will find that which was presented to you in this blog post, very beneficial.

Credits: I give credit to Fabiola Sikes of Utah County (Utah, U.S.A.) for suggesting the need for a Blog Index. Without her suggestion I most likely would have never set it up. Corollary credit needs to be given to: Richard K. Miller for suggesting electronic linking for this index. He made useful suggestions for doing that.

Jonathan Smith of Genoa, Utah, a relative through my marriage. His technological advice helped me apply some principles learned from Richard Miller.

Bryce Mitchell of Herriman, Utah, a step-grandson. He helped me understand some of the technological advice given me previously.

Bruce Westenskow of Murray, Utah, a member of our (my wife and I) LDS Ward. He is a professional in the Internet field. His help was crucial! My lack of training in Internet matters made it difficult for me to pull all of the advice together that I had been provided by the above-named skillful persons!

As I have indicated in my previous post, I initiated on June 7, 2010 an Index for all of the key subjects found in the approximately 204 posts I have published in this blog beginning in March of 2008. I am still in the process of including each of those posts in this Index. However, by my making that available which is already in this new Index, I believe you will find it a very helpful tool as you search for information related to the subjects covered in this blog!

TODAY'S THEME

Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Ethiopia in March 1985.

In this post I aim to review briefly how it came about that I became a blogger. I didn't grow up with computers and the Internet. I saw my first computer about two weeks after graduating from high school in Roseville, California (U.S.A.) in early June of 1950.

My father had worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad there since he was 17. He arranged for me to get a job there as a yard clerk only after I promised him I would not let that job keep me from beginning college right away. (I faithfully lived up to that promise. I received both a bachelors and masters degrees over the years from two Universities, one in Provo, Utah (BYU) and one in San Jose, California (California State University, San Jose, California).

When I first walked into the clerks' office from where I would do various jobs throughout that very large railroad yard, the first thing my bosses did was let me become acquainted with a large metal device which had electricity running into it. That was the first computer I ever had laid my eyes upon. As I remember it, it was about ten feet long and about four and a half feet tall. It sorted cards which each represented a railroad car that was in our railroad yard right then. Those cards were each eventually sorted by that machine into the particular train in which that railway car would leave that railway yard to go in one of all four directions. It was just a month or so later while in my first year of Junior College that I saw a television program for the first time.

Over the years in my occupation as a social worker for the LDS Church I began to become involved again with computers and ended up using my own lap-top in my work until I retired in April 1996 in Salt Lake City, UT.

I don't own a lap-top now but used one for a good number of years, even when my wife, Melva and I served a mission in Finland from 2004 to 2006. That lap-top eventually wore out and now we have a desk top computer and printer. I learned to use the Internet along the way and it helped us much while serving as missionaries in Finland.

For about six months in late 2007 and in early 2008, I did Family History Extraction work through the Internet on our computer as a church assignment. I regularly did a large volume of that work each month. It took much time and was very intensive. I enjoyed it because I knew it was helping LDS families do the necessary research on their family lines to be able to have the temple work done in LDS temples for ancestors who had already passed away from this life without having heard of the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ.

In about February or March of 2008 I happened to read a speech on the Internet delivered by an LDS Church Apostle, Elder M. Russell Ballard. He gave that speech at the BYU Hawaii December 2007 graduation. I've shown an interesting photo of him at the beginning of this post.
In the July 2008 Issue of the Ensign Magazine published by the LDS Church Elder Ballard expanded some on what he had said at that graduation. I quote just a brief portion of what he wrote for that article. "From its beginnings, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has used the power of the printed word to spread the message of the restored gospel throughout the world. The Lord, over the centuries, has had a hand in inspiring people to invent tools that facilitate the spreading of the gospel. The Church has adopted and embraced those tools, including print, broadcast media and the Internet . . ." (emphasis added)
Again, Elder Ballard in that article urged members of the LDS Church to set up their own blogs on the Internet so as to tell of the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ. I had already begun following his advice, after going about getting help, in beginning my own blog. I named it: Have You Really Read the Book of Mormon?

I named it that because in an April 2007 PBS Television Nationwide (U.S.A.) broadcast I watched, I couldn't believe at all that that program's Narrators had ever read the Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ.
One of those Narrators who I have quoted from time to time in my blog posts said something like: "Every time I read from the Book of Mormon I read words that were written by a poor and uneducated farm boy."
That Narrator didn't believe that Joseph Smith translated that book by the power of God. I had come to know, understand and to know spiritually the truthfulness of that Great Book over many years and from his words I knew that man must have never even read a page of it. It is a history of a complex nation of Israelites that were led by God to what is now known as Central America arriving there in about 570 B.C.

In it, as you may well know by now, there is much about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This Holy book stands side-by-side with the Holy Bible as a divine testament of the mission of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Enough said about that for now. In the October 2009 Issue of the Ensign Magazine, my name was mentioned (on page 24) in an article authorized by Elder Ballard. It was reported that I had begun and had continued my LDS blogging and was feeling very good about what I was doing.

I must also mention the role of the moregoodfoundation in helping me to begin my blogging. It was from something they had posted on the internet that gave me access to Elder Ballard's BYU-Hawaii graduation address mentioned above.

Moregoodfoundation is a non-profit organization that provides much information about the Church through the Internet. One of their officials, Richard K. Miller invited me to their offices (which are now in Orem, Utah (U.S.A.) in order to give me assistance in beginning to blog for the first time in my life.

I not only received very good help from him in learning the basics of blogging, but over two and half years he (although he left that organization over a year ago) along with one other moregoodfoundation employee, Fabiola Sikes, continued to answer my questions on various matters related to my blogging.

That organization has also, by means of the internet, informed organizations and individuals with whom they have contact, about my blog. That has helped increase my readership considerably!

I have, as of this month published my two hundredth Blog Post in my English language blog. I have not published that many in my Spanish language blog which is translated by a kind couple who originally came from Argentina and ended up in France. They are strong members of the LDS Church and I appreciate their translations which are done free of charge. I earn nothing from my blogging, except blessings from Heaven! (and I really need those!)

I've just taken a huge step forward in my blogging. In the just previous blog post of mine I introduced a new Blog Index from which you readers can search for topics which interest you and then are guided to click on an electronic link which pulls up a post in which I have written about that specific topic.

Now instead of going on with more words I will offer you an opportunity to use a small excerpt of blog post links that I have copied over from my Blog Index to this post. At the end of this blog post you will be able to gain access to that entire Index. I have not yet had the time to put all of my published posts into it, but it won't be too very long until I have done so. Of course, I will continue adding to it as long as I continue to blog which I hope will be for a long time.

Because June 8th, tomorrow, is the annual anniversary of the Prophet of the LDS Church announcing that the Priesthood would then be available to men of all races throughout the world, I would like you to access that particular post. I really enjoyed writing it. There is a very beautiful musical video within it that you will enjoy. Maybe today will be the first time you will have had the opportunity to use my Blog Index. I just introduced it in the post I published about four days ago. That was the post that comes just before this one (therefore, you can just scroll down to it).

Now, I'm not asking you to click on each of these links I'm providing you from my Blog Index, just the second one down. I added the other links just so you would know better what my Index looks like. Clicking on it will take you right to my Post 38l. I hope you will enjoy that experience. (However, you are welcome to click on the other links too if you so desire!)

TODAY'S THEME

Painting: Gary L. Kapp
Please Note: I announce in the last portion of this post an Index for this Blog which will assist you in searching all of my posts, past and present for topics that may interest you! Scroll to the bottom of this post for that!
This is the same painting as the fifth of five paintings I showed in my just previous Post 40j.

As you were told in that post, this painting is a depiction of the unexpected appearance of an angel of the Lord. After having totally startled and shocked all five of the young men shown here, the angel then called one of them, Alma, the son of the now, Prophet Alma, to repentance.

Later, we find that what Young Alma's four accomplices witnessed and heard, brought them to total repentance and brought each of them to a strong commitment to serve the Lord in bringing back His lost sheep instead of scattering His flock as they had been doing under the leadership of Young Alma.

The Angel's message caused Young Alma to suddenly see vividly the evil of his ways and to feel overwhelmingly the impact of his many sins. This caused him to go into a state of despair and subsequently into a comatose state.

With Alma's father and surely his father's close associate, King Mosiah, (the father of the four friends of young Alma who were with him when the Angel of the Lord appeared), both fathers had surely been praying that their sons would repent. The Lord was to answer their prayers in a remarkable way!

With Young Alma remaining in his comatose state for three days, it appears that much praying took place on the part of many righteous people who were aware of what had occurred.

Suddenly, while in the midst of great agony caused by intense guilt, Young Alma, appealed with all his heart and soul to the mercies of Jesus Christ, about whom he remembered hearing his father, Alma, teach the people of the church founded by the Lord through him.

Immediately upon Young Alma's appealing to the mercies of Jesus Christ, He, the Lord caused that his appeal for mercy was fully granted and Alma the Younger felt great peace and total forgiveness. That divinely imposed experience totally changed him.

I promised in Post 17 that I would provide further evidence in post 18 that the Book of Mormon was not thought up and authored by Joseph Smith as biased critics insist. This post, 40k, is a somewhat modified and updated version of Post 18. I also promised I would show that the Book of Mormon is a record Joseph Smith translated through the gifts and power of God.

As in post 18, I state now in this most recent post of mine, 40k, that the Book of Mormon was originally written by prophets of God on the ancient American Continent, including many direct writings by the young Alma who had become, through this traumatic yet blessed experience, a prophet like his father. Reports on the very successful missionary efforts of all four of the sons of King Mosiah are also found in the Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ.

Alma the Elder Baptizing at the Waters of Mormon -by Arnold Friberg
Dear (Prophet) Abinadi, here is another example of former rebels, five of them this time, who became like the First Alma, who came to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ through your preacing in King Noah's court. All five became believers in Jesus Christ and each gave up their rebellion against God because of your self-sacrificing facing up to the evil King Noah which helped that first Alma to see the truth and support it valiantly and who then later prayed that his son, Alma and his four friends, the sons of King Mosiah, would be saved from their great wickedness. Thank you! We will always be grateful for what you accomplished!

Back in late July, 2008 several weeks before I published my Post 18, on a Sunday morning in the Murray 3rd Ward of the Murray Utah (U.S.A.) Stake, of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, our regular teacher was unable to be with us and a former member of our ward bishopric substituted for her.

He taught us about chiasmus, which is an ancient so-called "poetic" form of writing that is very unique in its form. I'm going to show you what he showed us on the blackboard and on a piece of paper we each were given. I have seen presentations like this before under the auspices of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute of Scholarly Research at BYU, Provo, Utah (U.S.A.). This Sunday School presentation was a very effective presentation.

First, some background about Chiasmus: A young American LDS missionary serving in Germany back, I think, in the early 1960s, by the name of John W. Welch, was invited along with his companion to attend a lecture given by a notable German authority on the scriptures. I believe he was a minister of perhaps an Episcopalian Church.

The two Mormon missionaries attended the lecture in which this scriptural expert discussed the phenomenon of chiasmus, a form of Hebrew poetic (or particularly clarifying) form of writing found often in the Bible. Nonetheless, most readers of the Bible are unaware of the presence of chiasmus in that book and most people (perhaps including you) know nothing about chiasmus.

After returning to their apartment, Elder Welch found himself obsessed with what they had learned at that lecture. He knew that Book of Mormon prophets were from a Jewish background and that they had the "Plates of Brass" filled with scriptures, many of which are found in our Old Testament, along with many other scriptures that are not found there.

For this reason, after his companion had gone to bed, this intrigued missionary began reading through the Book of Mosiah (a sub-book of the Book of Mormon) searching for evidence of the use of Chiasmus by King Benjamin.

His search lasted for several hours and it was way past bedtime. He was, after all, looking for something he had first learned about, that evening. He almost gave up.

John Welch has written that instead of giving up his search, he knelt in prayer pleading for the Lord to help him find chiasmus in the Book of Mormon.

Not long after that prayer, his guidance by the Spirit in his searching resulted in his finding chiasmus in the writings of King Benjamin. He was elated and grateful.

John Welch pursued his research on Chiasmus after having earned a law degree and becoming a teacher of law at BYU. He is listed as the founder of that which became the Neal A. Maxwell Institute of Scholarly Research at BYU.

I have reproduced below an example of Chiasmus in diagram form of Alma 36: 1-30 some of which we have delved into above, but first I'll give you the opportunity of reading for yourself, this striking scripture. Note: you can listen to it while reading also. It is one chapter long. Listening will help you feel the power of this scripture.
Alma 36:1-30

Please note that this is the very scripture recorded by Alma the Younger in which he tells of his experience with the angel. Alma, perhaps instinctively, knew that which he told his son about this most crucial event in his life would need the power of Chiasmus!

Now, please examine closely the structure of the chiasmus diagram below.

There is a comment about, each of the thirty verses of this chapter in this diagram. You'll notice at the end of each line a verse number, which is a verse of chapter 36, i.e. (2), (3), etc., up to 30. You will also notice that that each line is headed by a letter in the alphabet, from (a) to (q), then it repeats backwards, going down, from (q') to (a'). You will have noticed that the last half's letters have a ' indicating they are in the last half.

Now you may have also noticed that some instructions for his son and the impacts on Alma of his experience with the Angel are listed in the top half (a to q) and the positive outcomes of his conversion experience are listed in the second half (q' to a').

Each letter of the alphabet and it's message corresponds to the same letter of the alphabet in both half's.

A CHIASMUS DIAGRAM: Alma Chapter 36 of the Book of Mormon

(b) Keep the commandments of God

Now that you have been shown the technical aspects of this chiasmus, go through the diagram, reading all of Alma's comments, beginning with (a) then dropping down to (a') and then from b to b', etc. The message of each letter is related to its corresponding letter in the other half of the diagram. You will begin to feel the power of that which Alma had experienced and learned.

Alma, in chiasmus form has given his son (and eventually each of us) a very dynamic view of the impact of the Angel's appearance to him. You will find that Chiasmus is a very effective way of telling such a dynamic experience.

In our day, and in most countries of the world, we are not familiar with this writing form. Again, chiasmus was a part of Alma's culture, being basically a Hebrew culture literary form.

In a culture in which memory was heavily relied upon because of the lack of printing presses, computers or even typewriters that we have today, the form that Chiasmus takes on itself helps the users of this form of speech (and writing) to be guided by its very systematic repetitive form to remember the entire message much more easily.

When Alma told his son, Helaman, about the visitation of the angel and what happened to him as a result, Alma strongly desired that his son remember this experience which had such a profound effect upon his own life.

Chiasmus definitely is not a part of any literary cultures of our day. It is my understanding that it wasn't even known by Americans or even the British in Joseph Smith's day.

Again, chiasmus is used extensively in the Bible as the minister of another church taught Elder John W. Welch and his companion, many years ago. It is very logical that it should be found in the Book of Mormon and it is found there in a good number of places. That is because the writers of that which is found in the Book of Mormon were brought up in a culture where chiasmus was a real part of their culture!

Now good readers, this is just one more remarkable piece of evidence that the Book of Mormon is a history of very complex matters that could never have been imagined by a young citizen of the State of New York in the 1820s. No one in that part of the world at that time was capable of figuring out Chiasmus then. However, it is an integral part of the very important writings contained in the Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ.

TODAY'S THEME

Painting: Tom Lovell

The Prophet Mormon, pictured above, born in about 400 A.D. was commissioned by the Lord Jesus Christ to compile the record of his people on golden plates (so the writing on them could be preserved for many centuries). He was also a general in the Nephite army. You can tell by his shield and sword being within easy reach that his assignment as a record compiling prophet was not the only thing that kept him busy.

Mormon sorely detested his people having degenerated from great righteousness which had come to them because of the first-hand ministry of the resurrected Lord, Jesus Christ among his ancestors about 366 years before. He was an honorable man who did all that he was called upon to do.

It was Mormon, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit who provided us, through the means of the Book of Mormon (which was called that because it was he who put together the records in such a way that in our day and time we could learn from the great lessons that he and his people had learned about serving their Heavenly Father and His resurrected son, Jesus Christ.

It was an inspired Mormon who chose to include the account of good King Benjamin's Temple Sermon through which Benjamin was guided by the Lord to bring about much righteousness among his people at the time he was preparing to turn over the kingdom to his son, Mosiah.

King Benjamin Delivers His Farewell Speech to His People, - by Gary Kapp
Mormon also included the account of the prophet, Abinadi, who very likely was present and deeply influenced by King Benjamin's temple sermon in about 124 B.C. and who had thereby developed the spiritual strength and determination along with direct guidance from God was eventually prepared to say the things in the court of King Noah which brought about Alma's conversion.

Abinadi Addressing King Noah and His Court -by Arnold Friberg

Mormon also chose to give us the account of Alma, a priest of wicked King Noah, who repented after hearing inspired Abinadi's preaching before the king and all his priests. Alma was very likely seated somewhere in that courtroom pictured by artist, Friberg, with the other priests.

King Noah's Former Priest, Now a Prophet of God Baptizes at the Waters of Mormon -by Arnold Friberg

Mormon also saw to it, under the guidance of the Holy Ghost, that we could learn of the converted priest, Alma, who meticulously wrote down all of the teachings of Abinadi for the benefit of himself and the other believing citizens of the kingdom who desired to obey the Gospel of Jesus Christ and who willingly submitted to baptism so that Jesus' Church could be formed under Alma, now a prophet of God.

The Prophet Mormon felt it important to tell us in Mosiah 26:1-24 of difficulties in the kingdom, the cause of which is specifically explained by Mormon in verses 1-3 of that chapter:
Mosiah 1 NOW it came to pass that there were many of the rising generation that could not understand the words of king Benjamin, being little children at the time he spake unto his people; and they did not believe the tradition of their fathers.
2 They did not believe what had been said concerning the resurrection of the dead, neither did they believe concerning the coming of Christ.
3 And now because of their unbelief they could not understand the word of God; and their hearts were hardened.
Alma the Younger and the Four Sons of King Mosiah are Reprimanded by an angel. -by Gary Kapp

This painting is a depiction of a remarkable answer to fervent prayer on the part of two fathers, Alma, who had been appointed the High Priest of the Ancient American land, Zarahemla, and his close associate and king, Mosiah.

Alma, the younger and the king's four sons had gone through the kingdom secretly trying to destroy the Church of Jesus Christ and were having much success.

These two fathers' prayers of faith were fully rewarded by the Lord. In our book of books, the Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ, we read what happened: You can read this in your Book of Mormon or if you prefer you can read and listen to it right here.

Mosiah 27

Having just read and listened to that, you will have learned that because of their experience with the angel of God, all five of these young men made a complete reversal in the direction their lives were taking them. Alma the younger became a great prophet (like his father) and also a government leader.

The sons of Mosiah, after pleading long and hard with their father for his permission to serve as missionaries to their nation's chief enemies, the Lamanites, were finally granted that opportunity. They became valiant and highly successful missionaries. They all remained faithful members of the Church of Jesus Christ for the rest of their lives.

I will tell of their astounding experiences in another post before too long.

As a young teenager in my hometown of Roseville, California, I remember well first hearing that Book of Mormon account at a fireside at the home of a family in our LDS ward. I was surprised that such a great prophet as Alma, could have once been an evil sinner.

I was old enough to know what sin could do to a person, namely, me. I thought it amazing that one could make such great changes in themselves as Alma the Younger did. It actually gave me hope that I could be forgiven for my sins if that Alma had been forgiven for all the greater evil He had done.

I learned from Alma's experience that it was through the power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ that his and my redemption became possible. What comforting assurance!

The above-mentioned Book of Mormon account gives, in Alma 27, the basic history of what happened when the prayers of the two fathers were answered. In Alma, Chapter 36 Alma the younger much later tells one of his own sons about his personal experience with the angel. That account gives you Alma's first-hand account of this astounding event. You can read that entire chapter from your own copy of the Book of Mormon or by clicking on the scriptural link below these instructions:

Alma 36: 1-30

Just in case you decided not to do that much listening/reading now, let me quote here a key thing Alma (the younger) told his own son, Helaman:
Alma 36:15. Oh thought I, that I could be banished and become extinct both soul and body, that I might not be brought to stand in the presence of my God, to be judged of my deeds.
16. And now for three days and for three nights was I racked, even with the pains of a damned soul.
17. And it came to pass that as I was thus racked with torment, while I was harrowed up by the memory of my many sins, behold, I remembered also to have heard my father prophesy unto the people concerning the coming of one Jesus Christ, a Son of God, to atone for the sins of the world.
18. Now, as my mind caught hold upon this thought, I cried within my heart: O Jesus, thou Son of God, have mercy on me, who am in the gall of bitterness, and am encircled about by the everlasting chains of death.
19. And now, behold, when I thought this, I could remember my pains no more.
20. And oh, what joy, and what marvelous light I did behold; yea, my soul was filled with joy as exceeding as was my pain!
There are other very sensitive, touching words spoken by Alma at that time, but I may be keeping you too long. If you desire to read it all, go back above and click on Alma 36:1-30 and read it all.

THERE IS HOPE FOR EACH OF US NO MATTER WHAT EVIL WE MAY HAVE DONE!

I look forward to publishing Post 40k in five days from now. The Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ, this book of books, (along with the Holy Bible) teaches great lessons the Lord Jesus Christ wants each of us to learn.

Thank you Mormon, and thank you Lord for directing Mormon to put that book together. I hope you readers recognize as we go through these writings of Mormon, how similar in style and in culture the accounts are to those in the Old Testament. After all the Nephite -Lamanite culture originated in the culture of ancient Israel.

40i - Abinadi's Gospel Teachings and Valiant Sacrifice Led Alma and The Lord's People Forward, Despite Much Adversity!

TODAY'S THEME

Note: In this post I am altering somewhat, Post 14 which I published in early 2008. In a recent post, Post 40f we learned of the role that the Nephite prophet, Abinadi played in the conversion of Alma, a priest of the wicked king Noah, who was called to repentance by Abinadi and who (Alma) wrote down all of the words that he had heard Abinadi speak to the king and his priests. As reported in that post Alma was soon afterwards directed by the Lord to set up His church among the people who, along with him, Alma, believed in the words of Abinadi.

The painting just below illustrates an experience Alma initiated while setting up the Lord's Church at the Waters of Mormon. In my Post 40f, I showed this same Arnold Friberg painting which shows Alma baptizing at that location, with their guards keeping a keen lookout for the possibility of King Noah's troops finding them.
Here is a smaller version of that painting to give you a feel for what was happening there.

Photo: Virginia Jensen Birch (My Mother)
Neil Birch at about age seven in front of the First Primary Childrens Hospital of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints -photo by Virginia Jensen Birch, Neil's mother.
(I will refer to that photo later.) In this post we will first check on Alma the Elder and those who had been baptized as members of the Church of Jesus Christ at the Waters of Mormon. Please read the following scripture to learn what they did soon after being baptised and had founded Christ's church.

A question for you. Why didn't the Lord arrange matters so that this faithful group of 450 saints would not have to speedily travel away from the Waters of Mormon into the wilderness to escape King Noah's army?

What about the strong words of prophecy that Abinadi uttered about the downfall of King Noah and his priests and the people who continued to follow them? Why should King Noah still be able to continue in his evil ways of preventing true believers from worshipping as they wish? Does the Lord have a purpose in allowing adversity to come upon His people? If so, why?

Examine your own life! Has any adversity you may have faced actually turned out to have had a beneficial effect on you? While you are trying to answer my question let me tell you about some adversity I experienced in a early part of my life.

On a Friday in about April of 2008 on a Friday afternoon while doing my forty minute elliptical exercise (six days a week routine, keeping my heart rate under 141 beats a minute as my doctor told me 76 year-olds should do, and using two medically implanted new knees - one on December 13, 2002 and the other on February 6, 2008), I saw and heard a good sized group of boys on the basketball court just behind me down on the first floor making all kinds of happy noises while working out in a basketball camp. They were really shouting for joy, the joy of using their bodies to develop skills needed in playing basketball.

I remembered right then, that at the age of those boys, I would have never been "shouting for joy" like those boys were doing because my doctor, Lucas W. Empey, had on purpose made my left knee stiff. At age five I had contracted Tuberculosis of the left knee which brought on a case of osteomyelites because of raw milk that turned out to be infected with TB bacteria we had been buying from a dairy near Roseville, California where I grew up.

To achieve my having a stiff left knee, Doctor Empey put me in traction for most of the rest of my fifth year by attaching pulleys to the outside end of my crib with weights on the ends of ropes that ran over the pulleys and stretched my left knee straight during much of the daytime hours for about half a year. This was done because the medical opinion was that by so doing my leg would be able to grow normally in length. And it did, but it remained stiff for 65 years until a new knee was implanted in my left leg.

During part of my sixth and seventh years I had a caste on my left knee and spent 14 months away from my family as a patient at the LDS Primary Children's' Hospital which was then located across North Temple Street from Temple Square in Salt Lake City. The photo at the beginning of this post was taken by my mother in the front yard of that hospital.

My parents felt that was the only thing they could do to have my knee treated by specialists and for me to be able to begin attending the first grade (which was taught right there in the hospital).
My Mother and Father and my brother who was two years younger than me lived 700 miles to the West from me. Whenever my mother would kiss me goodbye after visiting me for several days at the Children's' Hospital most every month, I cried, at times, almost uncontrollably.

Here is a second photograph of me as a seven year old. It was taken by a Deseret News photographer for an article in their March 18, 1939 issue. The cake was given to the children at the Primary Children's' Hospital to eat. This cake memorialized the Salt Lake Exchange Club's sixteenth anniversary. I'm the second boy from the right. My mother drew an arrow above me. I guess I was supposed to have a happy look on my face, but I don't think that is the kind of look I'm showing. Being away from home for fourteen months was tough.

I did very well in the first grade that was held at the hospital and there were many loving, caring nurses and I developed some good relationships with other children. Church meetings including Primary were held regularly. I learned to love our Savior, Jesus Christ, while there.

The adversity I went through during that time and to some extent all the time I was growing up because of that stiff knee, was actually something that shaped my life in a positive direction. In the Church of Jesus Christ there is a worthy man in every stake of the church whose responsibility it is to give patriarchal blessings from the Lord to individuals in the Church who desire to receive one. I received such a blessing when I was ten years old.

Let me quote a small portion of that blessing:
"...these things which have come unto you (my stiff knee and the challenges that came with that) will be for your good. For you shall develop patience and shall have a kindly spirit towards your fellow man, and love for your fellow man in his affliction shall be great in your heart." (I added that which is parenthesized.)
I shed some tears as I typed those words just now. That Patriarchal Blessing was a true prophecy of what did actually happen in my life!

I'm adding this paragraph later. Yesterday at a family reunion two female cousins of mine reminded me of a song my mother had sung to each of them as they were growing up, telling them each that it was what she would sing to me when I was down emotionally. This is it: (Note: "Kathleen", one of my blog viewers (on January 15, 2009) made several corrections in a "Comment" at the end of that original post of some of the words and part of the song title which was given in the original post - Thanks very much, Kathleen! I really appreciate her Comment. I welcome such helpful comments readers choose to make!)
Now back to my goal of reporting on the outcome of the adversity that came to the people of the Lord who were led by the prophet, Alma, the First. Also, you will want to know about the fulfilling of the prophecies regarding the downfall of King Noah and his priests. Please click on this link to learn some answers to these questions. Because this link is to a full chapter I suggest that after the scripture page comes up you scroll up and click on the word, Listen, which is on the left side (You don't need to do anything with the sound window that comes up.)

Mosiah 19:1-29 Reading and listening at the same time helps us to focus better.

Now we've just learned that the prophecies against King Noah had begun to be fulfilled. His army was reduced in size and therefore can't continue pursuing Alma the First and The People of the Lord. Also, serious trouble with the Lamanites is reported. King Limhi, Noah's more righteous son along with a strong advisor, Gideon, negotiates a peace with the Lamanite King. The Lamanites demand and receive a huge tribute of 50% of everything King Limhi's people earn. King Noah is killed by fire as prophesied by Abinadi. He was cowardly in commanding the men to leave their wives and children in the hands of the Lamanites and escaping into the wilderness. The Lord's prophecy through Abinadi is really coming through now!

I find it time to close this post. I eagerly look forward in Part 15 (Post 40j) in continuing to help us learn about how the Lord helped His people who are led by his prophet, Alma the First, through their adversities. I particularly want us to learn how these adversities helped them to grow and develop spiritually. Bright futures are often the result of having gone through tribulation.

By the way, what was the answer you gave to the question I asked you above, "Has any adversity you may have faced actually turned out to have had a beneficial effect on you?" If you would like you could e-mail your answer to me at: jneilmelva@gmail.com/ I will keep your answer confidential and not share it on my blog unless you ask me to do so.

I look forward to publishing Post 40j in five days from now. The Book of Mormon, this book of books, teaches great lessons the Lord Jesus Christ wants each of us to learn. My dear mother, Virginia Jensen Birch taught me to sing this song from the LDS Primary Association's song book used when I was a child to give me courage to face the challenges with my knee. Its Title is: HAPPINESS. (Words and Music by Mr. and Mrs. N.W. Christiansen.

I am hap-py to-day for the sunshine, for skies of gray or blue;
For with-in my heart is the song of life, I'll live! I'll work! I'll do!
No cloud can cast a shad-ow o-ver courage such as mine.
I'll sing my song as I go a-long, I'll live! I'll work! I'll do!
(It appeared in the LDS Primary Song Book: "The Children Sing.")
