TODAY'S THEME
Today's Theme is found in the INTRODUCTION to the Book of Mormon and is entitled: THE TESTIMONY OF THREE WITNESSES.

BE IT KNOWN unto all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people, unto whom this work shall come: That we, through the grace of God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, have seen the plates which contain this record, which is a record of the people of Nephi, and also of the Lamanites, their brethren, and also of the people of Jared, who came from the tower of which hath been spoken. And we also know that they have been translated by the gift and power of God, for his voice hath declared it unto us; wherefore we know of a surety that the work is true. And we also testify that we have seen the engravings which are upon the plates; and they have been shown unto us by the power of God, and not of man. And we declare with words of soberness, that an angel of God came down from heaven, and he brought and laid before our eyes, that we beheld and saw the plates, and the engravings thereon; and we know that it is by the grace of God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, that we beheld and bear record that these things are true. And it is marvelous in our eyes. Nevertheless, the voice of the Lord commanded us that we should bear record of it; wherefore, to be obedient unto the commandments of God, we bear testimony of these things. And we know that if we are faithful in Christ, we shall rid our garments of the blood of all men, and be found spotless before the judgment-seat of Christ, and shall dwell with him eternally in the heavens. And the honor be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, which is one God. Amen.

In this painting the Angel, Moroni has just delivered the Golden Plates, on which was recorded the Book of Mormon, to Joseph Smith -by Kenneth Riley

Now I give you the opportunity of reading a quote from a book whose cover is shown below.

Its Author, Terryl Givens, has provided us with a scholarly description of how three special witnesses were able to testify of the Golden Plates being a reality. The Angel Moroni depicted above while delivering the Golden Plates to Joseph Smith, later showed the three witnesses the actual Golden Plates from which Joseph through the power of God had translated the writings on those plates word for word.

I particularly appreciate the picture of the Nephite Prophet, Mormon on the cover of this book. Ever since first viewing it, whenever I think about the Great Prophet, Mormon, I see this picture in my mind.

Terryl L. Givens, Author
(This quote is taken from pages 38-40 of that book)
Throughout the trying process of safeguarding and translating the ancient record, ever-besieged by family, friends, and skeptics alike, Joseph (Smith) had been obedient to Moroni's directive not to share a view of the plates with anyone. Even his ill-advised permission for Martin Harris to publicly share the translated manuscript had been a catastrophe. That had been in June of 1828. Now, in March of the following year, Harris was shamelessly importuning the prophet once again for renewed confirmation that the nearly complete translation was based on real plates. He wanted to see them for himself. Given the fact that he had provided material assistance, was older than Joseph, was better known in the area, and had lost the good will of his wife over the whole matter, he doubtless felt entitled to at least that much. In a revelation Joseph received that month, Harris learned that three special witnesses would soon be given "power that they may behold and view these things as they are." If he humbled himself sufficiently, he was promised, he would be granted "a view of the things which he desires to see" (D. and C. 5:11-13,24).

In June, the final month of translation at the Whitmer home, Joseph learned that the record provided ancient confirmation of that promise: Moroni wrote that the plates would be "shown by the power of God" unto three "who shall assist to bring forth this work." (Ether 5:2-3) 121 and Nephi made a similar prediction. As his inner circle of three close associates--David Whitmer, Oliver Cowdery, and Martin Harris--participated in and monitored the progress of translation, they became excited at the prospect of fulfilling both ancient prophecy and their own longings to see for themselves the mysterious, holy relics. After repeated entreaties to Joseph he confirmed through the Urim and Thummim that they could indeed receive "a view of the plates, and also of the breastplate, the sword of Laban, the Urim and Thummim... and the miraculous directors which were given to Lehi" (D. and C. 17:1). The promise was followed by a command that they bear testimony to the world of that which they would have the privilege of seeing.

A few days later, Joseph felt the time had come. According to his account he gathered his three companions and they retired to the nearby woods "to try to obtain, by fervent and humble prayer, the fulfillment of the promises given." Each one prayed in turn, but without effect. Harris, feeling in his faithlessness that he was an impediment to a heavenly manifestation, retired from the group. Minutes later, in Joseph's words, "we beheld a light above us in the air, of exceeding brightness; and behold, an angel stood before us. In his hands he held the plates which we had been praying to have a view of. He turned over the leaves one by one, so that we could see them, and discern the engravings thereon distinctly." There followed a voice out of the bright light, saying, "These plates have been revealed by the power of God, and they have been translated by the power of God." 122 On a nearby table, the other sacred relics lay exposed to their view.

With the miraculous witness now secured by the other two, Joseph left to seek out the distressed Harris. He found him, and together they continued to supplicate the Lord. Soon the same vision the three had experienced previously was granted to Harris as well. An exuberant Harris burst out, "Tis enough' tis enough, mine eyes have beheld, mine eyes have beheld." It is hard to say who was more relieved, Harris from his years of nagging doubts, or Joseph from having no one to help diffuse the weight of a world's skepticism and trust his story unreservedly. His mother recalled that upon returning from the woods, Joseph threw himself on the bed, crying "Father! Mother! You do not know how happy I am. . . .I do feel as though I was relieved of a dreadful burden which was almost too much for me to endure." 123
I located that which I have recorded below while searching the Internet a year or so ago. It is a very supportive statement about the sureness of two of the witnesses mentioned above.

William E. Mc Lellin, pictured here, served as the president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when that quorum was first organized.
The following comes from Mc Lellin's once long-lost notebook. In a section titled, “The Testimony of Men.” he says the three witnesses of the Book of Mormon, who said they saw an angel, “either told the truth or they willfully lied. How shall we tell which, how shall we know?”

Then McLellin recounts a story of meeting two of the witnesses, Oliver Cowdery and David Whitmer, in July 1833 in Missouri. McLellin and the two were in danger of their lives from anti-Mormon mobs.

McLellin wrote:
“I said to them, 'Brethren, I never have seen an open vision in my life, but you men say you have, and therefore you positively know. Now, you know that our lives are in danger every hour, if the mob can only catch us. Tell me, in the fear of God is that Book of Mormon true?” Cowdery looked at me with solemnity depicted in his face and said: “Brother William, God sent his holy angel to declare the truth of the translation of it to us, and therefore we know. And though the mob kill us, yet we must die declaring its truth.' David said: 'Oliver has told you the solemn truth, for we could not be deceived. I most truly declare to you its truth!'
Said I: ''Boys, I believe you. I can see no object for you to tell me falsehood now, when our lives are endangered.'”
Note by Neil Birch: The Third witness, Martin Harris, also remained faithful to his witness to the end of his life. He died in Clarkston, Utah.

TODAY'S THEME

King Benjamin Teaches His People (About B.C. 124)

The Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ - Mosiah 2:19 And behold also, if I, whom ye call your king, who has spent his days in your service, and yet has been in the service of God, do merit any thanks from you, O how you ought to thank your heavenly King!
20 I say unto you, my brethren, that if you should render all the thanks and praise which your whole soul has power to possess, to that God who has created you, and has kept and preserved you, and has caused that ye should rejoice, and has granted that ye should live in peace one with another
21 I say unto you that if ye should serve him who has created you from the beginning, and is preserving you from day to day, by lending you breath, that ye may live and move and do according to your own will, and even supporting you from one moment to another—I say, if ye should serve him with all your whole souls yet ye would be unprofitable servants.
22 And behold, all that he requires of you is to keep his commandments; and he has promised you that if ye would keep his commandments ye should prosper in the land; and he never doth vary from that which he hath said; therefore, if ye do keep his commandments he doth bless you and prosper you.
23 And now, in the first place, he hath created you, and granted unto you your lives, for which ye are indebted unto him.
24 And secondly, he doth require that ye should do as he hath commanded you; for which if ye do, he doth immediately bless you; and therefore he hath paid you. And ye are still indebted unto him, and are, and will be, forever and ever; therefore, of what have ye to boast?
25 And now I ask, can ye say aught of yourselves? I answer you, Nay. Ye cannot say that ye are even as much as the dust of the earth; yet ye were created of the dust of the earth; but behold, it belongeth to him who created you. (emphasis added)

The Earth -Photo@Corbis
The Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God -by Heinrich Hofmann

The Lord Jesus Christ, Under the Direction of His Father, Our Heavenly Father, Created this Earth.
Genesis 1:1 IN the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
6 ¶ And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.
9 ¶ And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.
10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.
11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.
12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.
14 ¶ And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.
21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.
23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
24 ¶ And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.
25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
26 ¶ And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
29 ¶ And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.
31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
Heavenly Father inspired His Prophet, Moses to write the above describing His Creation of the Earth upon which we live.

Now here is a different version of how the earth was created (or how it supposedly developed into what it is). This was copied off of the Internet by me, Blogger, Neil Birch, and represents how some scientists have described how life on earth developed!

A Brief History of Life on Earth.

A Note from This Blogger: I am sure that there are elements of truth found in the following scientific analysis. However, their main supposition appears to be  that all life on earth evolved, that it was not created. (emphasis added)
Module by: Ian Harrison, Melina Laverty, Eleanor Sterling. The diversity of species, ecosystems and landscapes that surround us today are the product of perhaps 3.7 billion (i.e., 3.7×109) to 3.85 billion years of evolution of life on Earth (Mojzsis et al., 1996; Fedo and Whitehouse, 2002 [link]). Life may have first evolved under harsh conditions, perhaps comparable to the deep-sea thermal vents where chemo-autotrophic bacteria are currently found (these are organisms that obtain their energy only from inorganic, chemical sources).

A subterranean evolution of life has also been suggested. Rock layers deep below the continents and ocean floors, that were previously thought to be too poor in nutrients to sustain life, have now been found to support thousands of strains of microorganisms. Types of bacteria have been collected from rock samples almost 2 miles below the surface, at temperatures up to 75 degrees Celsius. These chemo-autotrophic microorganisms derive their nutrients from chemicals such as carbon, hydrogen, iron and sulphur. Deep subterranean communities could have evolved underground or originated on the surface and become buried or otherwise transported down into subsurface rock strata, where they have subsequently evolved in isolation. Either way, these appear to be very old communities, and it is possible that these subterranean bacteria may have been responsible for shaping many geological processes during the history of the Earth (e.g., the conversion of minerals from one form to another, and the erosion of rocks) (Fredrickson and Onstott, 1996).

The earliest evidence for photosynthetic bacteria - suspected to be cyanobacteria - is dated at sometime between 3.5 and 2.75 billion years ago (Schopf, 1993 [link]; Brasier et al., 2002 [link]; Hayes, 2002 [link]). These first photosynthetic organisms would have been responsible for releasing oxygen into the atmosphere. (Photosynthesis is the formation of carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water, through the action of light energy on a light-sensitive pigment, such as chlorophyll, and usually resulting in the production of oxygen). Prior to this, the atmosphere was mainly composed of carbon dioxide, with other gases such as nitrogen, carbon monoxide, methane, hydrogen and sulphur gases present in smaller quantities.

It probably took over 2 billion years, from the initial advent of photosynthesis for the oxygen concentration in the atmosphere to reach the level it is at today (Hayes, 2002 [link]). As oxygen levels rose, some of the early anaerobic species probably became extinct, and others probably became restricted to habitats that remained free of oxygen. Some assumed a lifestyle permanently lodged inside aerobic cells. The anaerobic cells might, initially, have been incorporated into the aerobic cells after those aerobes had engulfed them as food. Alternatively, the anaerobes might have invaded the aerobic hosts and become parasites within them. Either way, a more intimate symbiotic relationship subsequently evolved between these aerobic and anaerobic cells. In these cases the survival of each cell was dependent on the function of the other cell.

Just as there is a great difference between Our Heavenly Father's version of how the Earth was created compared to the version presented by some scientists, there is a great difference between how Our Heavenly Father and His Prophets who represent Him on the Earth Today describe the important role of the FAMILY!, compared to the way educated scientists and people who influence them describe what FAMILY means.

Soon after the recent 180th Semi-Annual General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was held, protests were held by individuals who call themselves: Gays and Lesbians. They complained specifically about the words of the President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Elder Boyd K. Packer spoken at that conference. I have quoted his entire talk. All that he said is relevant to each of you who want to understand this Church's stand on the matter of Family.

President Boyd K. Packer of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
This general conference was convened at a time when there is such confusion and such danger that our young people hardly know which way they can walk. Having been warned through the revelations that it would be this way, the prophets and apostles have always been shown what to do.
The Lord revealed to the Prophet Joseph Smith “that every man might speak in the name of God the Lord, even the Savior of the world.”1 When the keys were restored, they provided priesthood authority to be present in every home through the grandfathers, the fathers, and the sons.
Fifteen years ago, with the world in turmoil, the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles issued “The Family: A Proclamation to the World,” the fifth proclamation in the history of the Church. It is a guide that members of the Church would do well to read and to follow.
It states in part: “We, the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of His children.”2
“The Gods went down to organize man in their own image, in the image of the Gods to form they him, male and female to form they them."
This commandment has never been rescinded.

“And the Gods said: We will bless them. And . . . we will cause them to be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it.”3
“And we will prove them herewith, to see if they will do all things whatsoever the Lord their God shall command them.”4
It is intended that we be happy, for “men are, that they might have joy.”5
Lehi (a Book of Mormon prophet) taught that men are free and must be “free . . . to act for themselves and not to be acted upon, save it be by the punishment of the law at the great and last day.”6
The old saying “The Lord is voting for me, and Lucifer is voting against me, but it is my vote that counts” describes a doctrinal certainty that our agency is more powerful than the adversary’s will. Agency is precious. We can foolishly, blindly give it away, but it cannot be forcibly taken from us.
There is also an age-old excuse: “The devil made me do it.” Not so! He can deceive you and mislead you, but he does not have the power to force you or anyone else to transgress or to keep you in transgression.
To be entrusted with the power to create life carries with it the greatest of joys and dangerous temptations. The gift of mortal life and the capacity to kindle other lives is a supernal blessing. Through the righteous exercise of this power, as in nothing else, we may come close to our Father in Heaven and experience a fullness of joy. This power is not an incidental part of the plan of happiness. It is the key—the very key.
Whether we use this power as the eternal laws require or reject its divine purpose will forever determine what we will become. “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?”7
There is something very liberating when an individual determines of his or her own free will to be obedient to our Father and our God and expresses that willingness to Him in prayer.
When we obey, we can enjoy these powers in the covenant of marriage. From our fountains of life will spring our children, our family. Love between husband and wife can be constant and bring fulfillment and contentment all the days of our lives.
If one is denied these blessings in mortality, the promise is that they will be provided for in the world to come.
Pure love presupposes that only after a pledge of eternal fidelity, a legal and a lawful ceremony, and ideally after the sealing ordinance in the temple, are those life-giving powers released for the full expression of love. It is to be shared only and solely between man and woman, husband and wife, with that one who is our companion forever. On this the gospel is very plain.
We are free to ignore the commandments, but when the revelations speak in such blunt terms, such as “thou shalt not,” we had better pay attention.
The adversary is jealous toward all who have power to beget life. Satan cannot beget life; he is impotent. “He seeketh that all men might be miserable like unto himself.”8 He seeks to degrade the righteous use of the life-giving powers by tempting you into immoral relationships.
The Lord used the expression “is like unto” to create an image His followers could understand, such as:
“The kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man.”9
“The kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field.”10
In our day the dreadful influence of pornography is like unto a plague sweeping across the world, infecting one here and one there, relentlessly trying to invade every home, most frequently through the husband and father. The effect of this plague can be, unfortunately often is, spiritually fatal. Lucifer seeks to disrupt “the great plan of redemption,”11 “the great plan of happiness.”12
Pornography will always repel the Spirit of Christ and will interrupt the communications between our Heavenly Father and His children and disrupt the tender relationship between husband and wife.
The priesthood holds consummate power. It can protect you from the plague of pornography—and it is a plague—if you are succumbing to its influence. If one is obedient, the priesthood can show how to break a habit and even erase an addiction. Holders of the priesthood have that authority and should employ it to combat evil influences.
We raise an alarm and warn members of the Church to wake up and understand what is going on. Parents, be alert, ever watchful that this wickedness might threaten your family circle.
We teach a standard of moral conduct that will protect us from Satan’s many substitutes or counterfeits for marriage. We must understand that any persuasion to enter into any relationship that is not in harmony with the principles of the gospel must be wrong. From the Book of Mormon we learn that “wickedness never was happiness.”13
Some suppose that they were preset and cannot overcome what they feel are inborn temptations toward the impure and unnatural. Not so! Remember, God is our Heavenly Father.
Paul promised that “God . . . will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”14 You can, if you will, break the habits and conquer an addiction and come away from that which is not worthy of any member of the Church. As Alma cautioned, we must “watch and pray continually.”15
Isaiah warned, “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”16
Years ago I visited a school in Albuquerque. The teacher told me about a youngster who brought a kitten to class. As you can imagine, that disrupted everything. She had him hold the kitten up in front of the children.
It went well until one of the children asked, “Is it a boy kitty or a girl kitty?”
Not wanting to get into that lesson, the teacher said, “It doesn’t matter. It’s just a kitty.”
But they persisted. Finally, one boy raised his hand and said, “I know how you can tell.”
Resigned to face it, the teacher said, “How can you tell?”
the student answered, “You can vote on it!”
You may laugh at this story, but if we are not alert, there are those today who not only tolerate but advocate voting to change laws that would legalize immorality, as if a vote would somehow alter the designs of God’s laws and nature. A law against nature would be impossible to enforce. For instance, what good would a vote against the law of gravity do?
There are both moral and physical laws “irrevocably decreed in heaven before the foundations of this world” that cannot be changed.17 History demonstrates over and over again that moral standards cannot be changed by battle and cannot be changed by ballot. To legalize that which is basically wrong or evil will not prevent the pain and penalties that will follow as surely as night follows day.
Regardless of the opposition, we are determined to stay on course. We will hold to the principles and laws and ordinances of the gospel. If they are misunderstood either innocently or willfully, so be it. We cannot change; we will not change the moral standard. We quickly lose our way when we disobey the laws of God. If we do not protect and foster the family, civilization and our liberties must needs perish.
“I, the Lord, am bound when ye do what I say; but when ye do not what I say, ye have no promise.”18
Every soul confined in a prison of sin, guilt, or perversion has a key to the gate. The key is labeled “repentance.” If you know how to use this key, the adversary cannot hold you. The twin principles of repentance and forgiveness exceed in strength the awesome power of the tempter. If you are bound by a habit or an addiction that is unworthy, you must stop conduct that is harmful. Angels will coach you,19 and priesthood leaders will guide you through those difficult times.
Nowhere are the generosity and the kindness and mercy of God more manifest than in repentance. Do you understand the consummate cleansing power of the Atonement made by the Son of God, our Savior, our Redeemer? He said, “I, God, have suffered these things for all, that they might not suffer if they would repent.”20 In that supernal act of love, the Savior paid the penalties for our sins so that we might not have to pay.
For those who truly desire it, there is a way back. Repentance is like unto a detergent. Even ground-in stains of sin will come out.
Priesthood holders carry with them the antidote to remove the terrible images of pornography and to wash away guilt. The priesthood has the power to unlock the influence of our habits, even to unchain from addiction, however tight the grip. It can heal over the scars of past mistakes.
I know of no more beautiful and consoling words in all of revelation than these: “Behold, he who has repented of his sins, the same is forgiven, and I, the Lord, remember them no more.”21
Sometimes, even after confession and paying penalties, the most difficult part of repentance is to forgive one’s self. You must come to know that forgiveness means forgiveness.
“As often as my people repent will I forgive them their trespasses against me.”22
President Joseph Fielding Smith told me of a repentant woman struggling to find her way out of a very immoral life. She asked him what she should do now.
In turn, he asked her to read to him from the Old Testament the account of Lot’s wife, who was turned to a pillar of salt.23 Then he asked her, “What lesson do you gain from those verses?”
She answered, “The Lord will destroy the wicked.”
Not so!” President Smith said that the lesson for this repentant woman and for you is “Don’t look back!”24
Strangely enough, it may be that the simplest and most powerful prevention and cure for pornography, or any unclean act, is to ignore and avoid it. Delete from the mind any unworthy thought that tries to take root. Once you have decided to remain clean, you are asserting your God-given agency. And then, as President Smith counseled, “Don’t look back.”
I promise that ahead of you is peace and happiness for you and your family. The ultimate end of all activity in the Church is that a man and his wife and their children can be happy at home. And I invoke the blessings of the Lord upon you who are struggling against this terrible plague, to find the healing that is available to us in the priesthood of the Lord. I bear witness of that power in the name of Jesus Christ,  (clarification and emphasis added)
Several Days after that General Conference had ended a Protest Was Brought About by a Gay-Lesbian Group concerning some of Elder Packer's remarks quoted just above. The following was an official response by the Church to their protest.

Michael Otterson, Official Representative of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
A Note to Blog Readers: I, Neil Birch, even though realizing this already has become a long post with much to read, I desire to add that very recently, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints  has been criticised by individuals who have stated that the Church is wrong on their stand regarding the gay-lesbian issue because the LDS view that life has been brought about by the creation of God is wrong because scientists have proven that life has come about by EVOLUTION!
My name is Michael Otterson, I am here representing the leadership of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to address the matter of the petition presented today by the Human Rights Campaign.
While we disagree with the Human Rights Campaign on many fundamentals, we also share some common ground. This past week we have all witnessed tragic deaths across the country as a result of bullying or intimidation of gay young men. We join our voice with others in unreserved condemnation of acts of cruelty, or attempts to belittle or mock any group or individual that is different--whether those differences arise from race, religion, mental challenges, social status, sexual orientation, or for any other reason. Such actions simply have no place in our society.
This church has felt the bitter sting of persecution and marginalization early in our history, when we were too few in numbers to adequately protect ourselves and when society's leaders often seemed disinclined to help. Our parents, our young adults, teens and children should therefore, of all people, be especially sensitive to the vulnerable in society and be willing to speak out against bullying or intimidation whenever it occurs, including unkindness towards those who are attracted to others of the same sex. This is particularly so in our own Latter-day Saint congregations. Each Latter-day Saint family and individual should carefully consider whether their attitudes and actions to others properly reflect Jesus Christ's second great commandment — to love one another.
As a church, our doctrinal position is clear: any sexual activity outside of marriage is wrong, and we define marriage as between a man and a woman. However, that should never, ever be used as justification for unkindness. Jesus Christ, whom we follow, was clear in his condemnation of sexual immorality, but never cruel. His interest was always to lift the individual, never to tear down.
Further, while the church is strongly on the record as opposing same-sex marriage, it has openly supported other rights for gays and lesbians such as protections in housing or employment.
The church's doctrine is based on love. We believe that our purpose in life is to learn, grow and develop, and that God's unreserved love enables each of us to reach our potential. None of us is limited by our feelings or inclinations. Ultimately, we are free to act for ourselves.
The church recognizes that those of its members who are attracted to others of the same sex experience deep emotional, social, and physical feelings. The church distinguishes between feelings or inclinations on the one hand, and behavior on the other. It's not a sin to have feelings, only in yielding to temptation.
There is no question that this is difficult, but church leaders and members are available to help lift, support and encourage fellow members who wish to follow church doctrine. Their struggle is our struggle. Those in the church who are attracted to someone of the same sex but stay faithful to the church's teachings can be happy during this life and perform meaningful service in the church. They can enjoy full fellowship with other church members including attending and serving in temples, and ultimately receive all the blessings afforded to those who live the commandments of God.
Obviously, some will disagree with us. We hope that any disagreement will be based on a full understanding of our position, and not on distortion or selective interpretation. The church will continue to speak out to ensure its position is accurately understood.
God's universal fatherhood and love charges each of us with an innate and reverent acknowledgement of our shared human dignity. We are to love one another. We are to treat each other with respect as brothers and sisters and fellow children of God, no matter how much we may differ from one another.
We hope and firmly believe that within this community, and in others, kindness, persuasion and goodwill can prevail.
I believe that most of you readers of this post will agree with me and the Church to which I belong, along with perhaps many of you, that this earth and everything upon it came about because of God and His Son Jesus Christ!

Post 41n - The Lord Jesus Christ Desires that Each of Us Put Off the "Natural Man" and Face Life With a "Broken Heart and a Contrite Spirit!"

To Access This Blog's Index, Please Scroll Down To the Fifth Paragraph From The End of This Post.

Special Note: In this post I have again given you an opportunity of experiencing speeches from the 180th Semi-Annual Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. You will find that in the seventh paragraph from the end of this post!

****
TODAY'S THEME

(The Book of Mormon) Mosiah 3:19 For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father.

This Chilean Miner

and this other Chilean Miner Pray After Having Been Rescued After Being Trapped 69 days Deep Underground.

While listening to our local Radio Station (KSL 102.7fm, Salt Lake City, Utah (U.S.A.) Today, (October 14, 2010), it was reported that one of the rescued Chilean miners said during an interview after his being rescued along with 32 others:
"It's only when you find yourself in a bad place that you get yourself close to God."
One of the two miners pictured above may or may not be the miner who made that statement , but obviously both of the two miners shown praying in these two pictures are deeply grateful to God for being rescued. The quote given above might possibly represent the feelings of a good number of those rescued on that occasion.

I, Neil Birch, publisher of this blog, suggest that there are several other ways to basically say what that heroic Chilean Miner, whoever he was, had to say: My own suggestion is:
We need something to jar us some (or quite a bit), to wake us up to the realities of the downward path that we may already be on along with a large portion of people who are living in our day and time on earth. We need Our Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, to teach us more about how to turn to Them for guidance! Hopefully it won't take going through the type of dreadful and awful experience these two miners went through along with the 31 others who were with them, for each of us to fully realize that "we are in a bad place already."(spiritually speaking) We shouldn't wait until something tragic happens to us to get close to God! We each need to turn to God now!
Actually in some of my blog posts I have singled out incidents reported in the Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ, where people had been living contrary to God's will and didn't really realize it (like that miner who was quoted above) until something happened to help shock them enough to cause them to turn to God for help!

Although there are a good number of examples of those kinds of experiences in that sacred book I will give you just two examples from The Book of Mormon of that kind of "spiritual awakening."

I have told of this first incident three or four times throughout my posts in the two and a half years I have been publishing them:

Painting: Gary Kapp
Alma the Younger and the Four Sons of King Mosiah are Chastized by an Angel of the Lord -by Gary Kapp
Each of these five young men, sons of righteous fathers who had taught them to live righteously, had to be chastised by an angel to finally realize that they were in a "bad place" (equal, in a strong spiritual sense, to that in which those miners mentioned above, found themselves), so they could drastically change their lives!  The five of them had been actively leading people away from  God's Church and evidently greatly enjoyed doing so.

One of them, Alma (He is the one the angel is looking directly at), was the son of the Prophet, Alma the Elder, of God's Church in their land and the four others were sons of the king of the land. Here Alma (the younger) tells of what he experienced because of the angel's impassioned message:
Alma 36:15. Oh thought I, that I could be banished and become extinct both soul and body, that I might not be brought to stand in the presence of my God, to be judged of my deeds.
16. And now for three days and for three nights was I racked, even with the pains of a damned soul.
17. And it came to pass that as I was thus racked with torment, while I was harrowed up by the memory of my many sins, behold, I remembered also to have heard my father prophesy unto the people concerning the coming of one Jesus Christ, a Son of God, to atone for the sins of the world.
18. Now, as my mind caught hold upon this thought, I cried within my heart: O Jesus, thou Son of God, have mercy on me, who am in the gall of bitterness, and am encircled about by the everlasting chains of death.
19. And now, behold, when I thought this, I could remember my pains no more.
20. And oh, what joy, and what marvelous light I did behold; yea, my soul was filled with joy as exceeding as was my pain! (emphasis added)
Now those among you readers of this blog post who have read a good number of my posts (or read the Book of Alma in the Book of Mormon) will most likely have read of the complete turnabout each of these five friends made in their lives.

They are each listed now among the number of exceptionally successful missionaries among both the Nephite and Lamanite people of their day on earth. They helped bring many previously Lost Souls, (Spiritually Speaking) to the Lord Jesus Christ (who was yet to be born on earth) and into His church, which church they previously had been actively seeking to destroy.
Perhaps each of you readers of this blog post can see that Alma's and his four friends' experience in being in a very bad situation (Being chastised severely by an Angel sent by God) is evidence of the truth spoken by the Chilean miner:
"It's only when you find yourself in a bad place that you get yourself close to God."
Now I try to keep from making  these blog posts too long, but because this is such a crucial subject for each of us (We really don't want to be stuck in a spiritually bad condition in our lives) I will now quote from my post 33s.

The statement located just below the Picture of the Resurrected Jesus Christ that you will see next, was made by our Resurrected Savior, Jesus Christ from the air before the Nephites had actually seen Him.

He was introduced by Heavenly Father's voice! It occurred during the time of the thick darkness they found themselves in, which scientists say always follows in the aftermath of a such cataclysms which, in this case, completely wiping out many Nephite cities in ancient Central America, killing all of their inhabitants.

Those whose lives were spared were the more righteous Nephites but they too,  were experiencing a very bad time similar in many respects to what the Chilean miners in our day experienced.

These Nephites had been grieving for their fellow, but very wicked, Nephite friends and relatives who had been destroyed who lived in other cities, by the great cataclysmic destruction that had been brought upon them! [A.D.34]
Scientists in our day verify that such cataclysms, although rarely occurring have occurred and those scientists have come to fathom the great magnitude of the destruction they wreak! Nearly Suffocating darkness afterwards is always a part of that.
The Resurrected Jesus Whose Voice the Righteous Nephites who were saved from destruction heard only at first! They saw Him later when the clouds of darkness had dissipated and he had descended from the sky to be with them! -by Harry Anderson
(Book of Mormon) III Nephi 9:18 I am the light and the life of the world. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.
19 And ye shall offer up unto me no more the shedding of blood; yea, your sacrifices and your burnt offerings shall be done away, for I will accept none of your sacrifices and your burnt offerings.
20 And ye shall offer for a sacrifice unto me a broken heart and a contrite spirit. And whoso cometh unto me with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, him will I baptize with fire and with the Holy Ghost, even as the Lamanites, because of their faith in me at the time of their conversion, were baptized with fire and with the Holy Ghost, and they knew it not.
21 Behold, I have come unto the world to bring redemption unto the world, to save the world from sin.
22 Therefore, whoso repenteth and cometh unto me as a little child, him will I receive, for of such is the kingdom of God. Behold, for such I have laid down my life, and have taken it up again; therefore repent, and come unto me ye ends of the earth, and be saved. (emphasis added)
Here is another key verse from that same chapter: Each of us, you and I, can use the Book of Mormon as a guide to help us realize that just living here on earth where so many are living more wickedly, that all of us are in a bad place and have a great need to turn to God.

I'm sure most all of you are doing much good, but we don't fully realize how much wickedness exists in our world today. You and many others may be trying to keep yourselves out of that wickedness, but you could benefit and be more protected from evil by being active members of the Lord's Restored (Re-established) Church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I am so grateful for my membership in that Church as you can tell from what I say in the posts of this blog!
III Nephi 9: 11 And because they did cast them all out, (the prophets and Saints that He had sent among them to call them to repentance) that there were none righteous among them, I did send down fire and destroy them, that their wickedness and abominations might be hid from before my face, that the blood of the prophets and the saints whom I sent among them might not cry unto me from the ground against them. (clarification added)
Perhaps if I were in that that Chilean miner's place after recovering sufficiently from the bad effects of being trapped under ground for over two months, and realizing what is really happening in our world today, I would say:

"It's only when we finally realize that the kind of life being lived more and more here on earth is getting worse and worse, that we will want to change our way of living so that we can get ourselves closer to God and receive the protection only He can give."
I now suggest that you review one of my past posts which will help you get the big picture of what is happening on earth in our day and which will eventually (before very long) lead us to the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ!

Jesus Christ Speaks with Moroni

Ether 12: 23 And I said unto him: Lord, the Gentiles will mock at these things, because of our weakness in writing; for Lord thou hast made us mighty in word by faith, but thou hast not made us mighty in writing; for thou hast made all this people that they could speak much, because of the Holy Ghost which thou hast given them;
24 And thou hast made us that we could write but little, because of the awkwardness of our hands. Behold, thou hast not made us mighty in writing like unto the brother of Jared, for thou madest him that the things which he wrote were mighty even as thou art, unto the overpowering of man to read them.
25 Thou hast also made our words powerful and great, even that we cannot write them; wherefore, when we write we behold our weakness, and stumble because of the placing of our words; and I fear lest the Gentiles shall mock at our words.
26 And when I had said this, the Lord spake unto me, saying: Fools mock, but they shall mourn; and my grace is sufficient for the meek, that they shall take no advantage of your weakness;
27 And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.
28 Behold, I will show unto the Gentiles their weakness, and I will show unto them that faith, hope and charity bringeth unto me—the fountain of all righteousness.
29 And I, Moroni, having heard these words, was comforted, and said: O Lord, thy righteous will be done, for I know that thou workest unto the children of men according to their faith; (emphasis added)

Joseph Smith, who translated the Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ, by the power of God, and those of faith who humbly read it, have (or will have) learned of its truthfulness and be guided in their lives by its great teachings. Thank you Dear Moroni! And Thank you Dear Mormon! Thank You most of all, Dear Lord!
Painting: Del ParsonJoseph Smith Translating the Plates

I, Neil Birch, am deeply touched by the words from Ether 12 quoted above. I love Moroni and his father, Mormon, for their great devotion to the Lord in bringing about this great book. The Book of Mormon was and still is and will continue to be, a key part of the Lord's Latter-day Work in preparing a people to greet Him and the Hosts of Heaven as they descend from the sky on that great day!

The Second Coming

From the very beginning of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ, was a very powerful tool in the hands of missionaries called to serve in various places in the United States as it was constituted in that day.

By 1837 the Lord, through His Prophet, Joseph Smith, had called several members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles to open missionary work across the Atlantic Ocean in England. Of course, the Book of Mormon became a very important part of the Lord's work there.

The River Ribble Near Preston, England

On Saturday evening, 29 July, 1837 the Mormon missionaries agreed to baptize fifteen of the eager investigators the following morning in the River Ribble near the tram bridge. There the small but tempestuous rapids on one side of the river partly swirled into a quiet eddy, creating a beautiful pool, edged by a grassy slope. Farther back were large weeping willows and bushes.

Accounts are not clear as to how the missionaries would select the first person to be baptized in England. However, Elder Heber C. Kimball, of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, who led the mission, recorded this:
A circumstance took place which I cannot refrain from mentioning, for it will show the eagerness and the anxiety of some in that land to obey the gospel. Two of the male candidates, when they changed their clothes at a distance of several rods from the place where I was standing in the water, were so anxious to obey the Gospel that they ran with all their might to the water, each wishing to be baptized first. The younger, George D. Watt, being quicker of foot than the older, outran him, and came first into the water.
It so happens that the older of the two foot racers at that first LDS baptism in England was 53 year old Henry Clegg who thus became the second person baptized in England. He is one of my wife, Melva Giles Birch's ancestors. He remained faithful to The Lord and to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the end of his life. Most all of his descendants know all about that footrace to try to become the first person baptized into the church in England.

You have just learned about the first baptism of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in England. Thousands upon thousands of members of the church there before long moved to the United States of America, especially in the early years of the Church.

In this the Twenty First Century, the Church is very strong in England. One important indicator of that is that for a good number of years there have been temples there. This is an indication that the Church is firmly strong in that great nation. I'm sure the Prophets Mormon and Moroni are pleased that the Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ has a an important role in the growth of the Lord's Church in that Land.

The scripture used as TODAY'S THEME of this post is, in my humble opinion, one of the greatest of all scriptures. Therefore, after having given you the opportunity of reading seven of the forty one verses in that chapter, I'm now giving you the opportunity of reading and listening to all 41 verses of it. You won't regret choosing to do so!

After you have clicked on this scripture electronically you can choose, if you would like to do so, to listen to it also.
