41q - With The Golden Plates Safely Secured in the Ground In a Secluded Spot on a Large Hill (Sometime Between A.D. 400 and 421) the Mortal Moroni Felt Assured That The Plates Were Where They Needed to Be In Order to Fulfill the Lord Jesus Christ's Purposes!

The Mortal Moroni in About A.D. 421 Prepares to Bury a Set of Golden Plates Upon Which is Inscribed a Sacred Record Written in a Hebraic Language In Which Egyptian Characters (Letters) were Used; From Which Eventually Would Come the Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ  -Painting By Tom Lovell

Sometime in the Fifth Century A.D. when the still mortal Moroni had just finished engraving his inspired portion of the record contained on the Golden Plates upon which his father, Mormon had previously engraved the greater portion of what the two of them had inscribed upon them; he, Moroni, most likely had never yet heard the name, Joseph Smith. Smith may have been a strange sounding name to him then, if he had even ever  heard of it, because it most likely had never been an Hebraic name. However, the name, Joseph was found in their language.

However, in a future century in this world's history now known as the Nineteenth Century A.D. on the evening of September 21, 1823 this very same Moroni, then a resurrected human being, an Angel of Light, appeared to seventeen year old Joseph Smith, Jr., in a up-stairs bedroom of the Smith Family dwelling located near Palmyra, New York (U.S.A.) and begin preparing Joseph, by heavenly assignment, to be the one to translate the record his father, Mormon, and he had each engraved portions of onto those Plates of Gold (thus ensuring that their precious and sacred record  could endure in an underground hiding place for many centuries).

The Angel, Moroni Instructing Joseph Smith -Painting By Tom Lovell

Moroni, through the guidance of the Spirit of Prophecy and Revelation in his mortal life, had evidently carefully hidden his and his father's precious record in a way that it would remain protected and undiscovered in that exact same spot for about eighteen centuries.

Moroni knew by that same Spirit their record would be made available to a young man whom Heavenly Father, through His Son Jesus Christ, was to chose from among His many spirit children who were destined to be born in that area and time of the world's history, who would eventually be prepared by him, Moroni, who would then be an angel of light, (a resurrected being), to translate their precious record into that young man's language, the American English of the nineteenth century A.D, and which translation would eventually be given its full name: the Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ.

Now I seek to assist you to comprehend more fully key events and general attitude patterns of human behavior that were to exist among the Gentiles of our day. Moroni knew these were to occur in our day (the Nineteenth through the Twentieth Centuries (and at least into the Twenty First Century.) Moroni, the Last of the Nephites, viewed and then reported on those subjects in about A.D. 421 through the Spirit of Prophecy and Revelation. I provide this assistance by quoting and illustrating the entire Chapter Eight of the Book: Mormon.
You may want to have a handkerchief nearby to wipe the tears from your eyes from time to time as you read this illustrated chapter.
Moroni knew by that Spirit of Prophecy and Revelation that their record would be sorely needed in those Latter-days. That knowledge surely had given him, a devoted servant of Jesus Christ, (who after His resurection in Jerusalem had visited and taught Moroni's direct ancestors in ancient Central America); an avid determination necessary to accomplishing that which he knew he must eventually accomplish.

You will first read about the despairing circumstances in which Moroni found himself, all alone for an unknown length of time before his death; and also about what he told us throughout that entire chapter regarding the very specific evil attitudes and behavior which were to prevail in that then future time of the world's history (our time), along with some of the righteous circumstances in our day and time which Mormon and Moroni's record would greatly facilitate!

It was exceedingly necessary that their sacred record be published and made available for the entire Latter-day world to consider so mankind would have the opportunity to be significantly assisted in preparing themselves to heed that record's crucial message.  Thus far it has been translated into 83 different languages, but that number will continue to increase!

Many of us have chosen to heed the Book of Mormon's poignant plea for righteous living, but also many many more have chosen not to, which continues to be the way it is with that exceedingly choice and imposing record, The Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ.

MORMON, CHAPTER 8 HEADING: The Lamanites seek out and destroy the Nephites—The Book of Mormon shall come forth by the power of God—Woes pronounced upon those who breathe out wrath and strife against the work of the Lord—The Nephite record shall come forth in a day of wickedness, degeneracy, and apostasy. Written in about A.D. 400–421

1 BEHOLD I, Moroni, do finish the record of my father, Mormon. Behold, I have but few things to write, which things I have been commanded by my father.
2 And now it came to pass that after the great and tremendous battle at Cumorah, behold, the Nephites who had escaped into the country southward were hunted by the Lamanites, until they were all destroyed.
3 And my father also was killed by them, and I even remain alone to write the sad tale of the destruction of my people. But behold, they are gone, and I fulfil the commandment of my father. And whether they will slay me, I know not.
Mormon's Last Moments of Life -By Arnold Friberg

4 Therefore I will write and hide up the records in the earth; and whither I go it mattereth not.
5 Behold, my father hath made this record, and he hath written the intent thereof. And behold, I would write it also if I had room upon the plates, but I have not; and ore I have none, for I am alone. My father hath been slain in battle, and all my kinsfolk, and I have not friends nor whither to go; and how long the Lord will suffer that I may live I know not.

6 Behold, four hundred years have passed away since the coming of our Lord and Savior.

7 And behold, the Lamanites have hunted my people, the Nephites, down from city to city and from place to place, even until they are no more; and great has been their fall; yea, great and marvelous is the destruction of my people, the Nephites.
8 And behold, it is the hand of the Lord which hath done it. And behold also, the Lamanites are at war one with another; and the whole face of this land is one continual round of murder and bloodshed; and no one knoweth the end of the war.

9 And now, behold, I say no more concerning them, for there are none save it be the Lamanites and robbers that do exist upon the face of the land.

10 And there are none that do know the true God save it be the disciples of Jesus, who did tarry in the land until the wickedness of the people was so great that the Lord would not suffer them to remain with the people; and whether they be upon the face of the land no man knoweth.

11 But behold, my father and I have seen them, and they have ministered unto us.

12 And whoso receiveth this record, and shall not condemn it because of the imperfections which are in it, the same shall know of greater things than these. Behold, I am Moroni; and were it possible, I would make all things known unto you.

13 Behold, I make an end of speaking concerning this people. I am the son of Mormon, and my father was a descendant of Nephi.

14 And I am the same who hideth up this record unto the Lord; the plates thereof are of no worth, because of the commandment of the Lord. For he truly saith that no one shall have them to get gain; but the record thereof is of great worth; and whoso shall bring it to light, him will the Lord bless.

15 For none can have power to bring it to light save it be given him of God; for God wills that it shall be done with an eye single to his glory, or the welfare of the ancient and long dispersed covenant people of the Lord.

16 And blessed be he that shall bring this thing to light; for it shall be brought out of darkness unto light, according to the word of God; yea, it shall be brought out of the earth, and it shall shine forth out of darkness, and come unto the knowledge of the people; and it shall be done by the power of God.

17 And if there be faults they be the faults of a man. But behold, we know no fault; nevertheless God knoweth all things; therefore, he that condemneth, let him be aware lest he shall be in danger of hell fire.

18 And he that saith: Show unto me, or ye shall be smitten—let him beware lest he commandeth that which is forbidden of the Lord.

19 For behold, the same that judgeth rashly shall be judged rashly again; for according to his works shall his wages be; therefore, he that smiteth shall be smitten again, of the Lord.

20 Behold what the scripture says—man shall not smite, neither shall he judge; for judgment is mine, saith the Lord, and vengeance is mine also, and I will repay.
21 And he that shall breathe out wrath and strifes against the work of the Lord, and against the covenant people of the Lord who are the house of Israel, and shall say: We will destroy the work of the Lord, and the Lord will not remember his covenant which he hath made unto the house of Israel—the same is in danger to be hewn down and cast into the fire;
22 For the eternal purposes of the Lord shall roll on, until all his promises shall be fulfilled.

Yea, behold I say unto you, that those saints who have gone before me, who have possessed this land, shall cry, yea, even from the dust will they cry unto the Lord; and as the Lord liveth he will remember the covenant which he hath made with them.

24 And he knoweth their prayers, that they were in behalf of their brethren. And he knoweth their faith, for in his name could they remove mountains; and in his name could they cause the earth to shake; and by the power of his word did they cause prisons to tumble to the earth; yea, even the fiery furnace could not harm them, neither wild beasts nor poisonous serpents, because of the power of his word.

25 And behold, their prayers were also in behalf of him that the Lord should suffer to bring these things forth.

26 And no one need say they shall not come, for they surely shall, for the Lord hath spoken it; for out of the earth shall they come, by the hand of the Lord, and none can stay it; and it shall come in a day when it shall be said that miracles are done away; and it shall come even as if one should speak from the dead.
27 And it shall come in a day when the blood of saints shall cry unto the Lord, because of secret combinations and the works of darkness.

28 Yea, it shall come in a day when the power of God shall be denied, and churches become defiled and be lifted up in the pride of their hearts; yea, even in a day when leaders of churches and teachers shall rise in the pride of their hearts, even to the envying of them who belong to their churches.
29 Yea, it shall come in a day when there shall be heard of fires, and tempests, and vapors of smoke in foreign lands;

and all manner of abominations; when there shall be many who will say, Do this, or do that, and it mattereth not, for the Lord will uphold such at the last day. But wo unto such, for they are in the gall of bitterness and in the bonds of iniquity.
32 Yea, it shall come in a day when there shall be churches built up that shall say: Come unto me, and for your money you shall be forgiven of your sins.
33 O ye wicked and perverse and stiffnecked people, why have ye built up churches unto yourselves to get gain? Why have ye transfigured the holy word of God, that ye might bring damnation upon your souls? Behold, look ye unto the revelations of God; for behold, the time cometh at that day when all these things must be fulfilled.
34 Behold, the Lord hath shown unto me great and marvelous things concerning that which must shortly come, at that day when these things (the book derived from His and His Father, Mormon's golden plates)shall come forth among you.

As is illustrated in the photo above, the Book of Mormon quickly became a key proselyting tool in the hands of the missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints! I'm sure the foreknowledge of this caused Moroni to rejoice about "Great and Marvelous Things concerning that which must surely come at that day when these things shall come forth among you."
35 Behold, I speak unto you as if ye were present, and yet ye are not. But behold, Jesus Christ hath shown you unto me (by the power of the Spirit of Revelation and Prophecy), and I know your doing.
36 And I know that ye do walk in the pride of your hearts; and there are none save a few only who do not lift themselves up in the pride of their hearts, unto the wearing of very fine apparel, unto envying, and strifes, and malice, and persecutions, and all manner of iniquities; and your churches, yea, even every one, have become polluted because of the pride of your hearts.

37 For behold, ye do love money, and your substance, and your fine apparel, and the adorning of your churches, more than ye love the poor and the needy, the sick and the afflicted.
38 O ye pollutions, ye hypocrites, ye teachers, who sell yourselves for that which will canker, why have ye polluted the holy church of God? Why are ye ashamed to take upon you the name of Christ? Why do ye not think that greater is the value of an endless happiness than that misery which never dies—because of the praise of the world?
39 Why do ye adorn yourselves with that which hath no life, and yet suffer the hungry, and the needy, and the naked, and the sick and the afflicted to pass by you, and notice them not?
Photo From the Internet
40 Yea, why do ye build up your secret abominations to get gain, and cause that widows should mourn before the Lord, and also orphans to mourn before the Lord, and also the blood of their fathers and their husbands to cry unto the Lord from the ground, for vengeance upon your heads?

An Aztec sword, a Maquahuitl (Could be similar to the swords Mormon and Moroni armed themselves with as Nephite Army Generals - those swords' blades were made of wickedly sharp obsidian materials.)
41 Behold, the sword of vengeance hangeth over you; and the time soon cometh that he avengeth the blood of the saints upon you, for he will not suffer their cries any longer. (clarification and emphasis added)
And with each of those very accurate examples of things that were to take place in our day we have ample evidence that the mortal Moroni in about 400 - 421 A.D. was worthy and skilled in the use of the Spirit of Prophecy and Revelation! It is also keen evidence that he was totally devoted to helping bringing about our Lord and Savior's great work in our day!

By the way, please do not judge Moroni harshly because of the perhaps, somewhat angry tones in some of his statements throughout Mormon, Chapter 8. Any anger he showed is justified!

Billions of people in our day are ignoring the records that he and his father, Mormon, were so instrumental in bringing about for our ultimate benefit and for the benefit of the descendants of Mormon and Moroni's own people who need much assistance in our day, but are most often looked down upon, scorned and greatly neglected!
Think how you might feel if you were the very last of your nation, all the rest having been killed by your enemies, and now your enemies are fighting one another and you have no idea how you can live by yourself or whether you too will be killed, along with Moroni's chief concern being that the sacred records he and his father, Mormon tirelessly prepared will come forth and be used for the Lord's righteous purposes in our day on earth!
I am personally positive that most of the time Moroni felt at peace concerning his past, present and future role in God's great work! After all, through the Spirit of Prophecy and Revelation he surely had been told much about that!

Here is a promise our Lord Jesus Christ made regarding Moroni in a revelation on the subject of the Sacrament (of the Lord's Supper) to the Prophet Joseph Smith in August of 1838:
Doctrine and Covenants 27:5 Behold, this is wisdom in me; wherefore, marvel not, for the hour cometh that I will drink of the fruit of the vine with you on the earth, and with Moroni, whom I have sent unto you to reveal the Book of Mormon, containing the fulness of my everlasting gospel, to whom I have committed the keys of the record of the stick of Ephraim;

____________
I am, and hope that each of you blog readers will soon be too, if you are not already, deeply convinced that the Book of Mormon is such an overwhelmingly essential and formidable part of the restoration (re-establishment) of the Lord Jesus Christ's Gospel in this so very crucial phase of the history of this world. That book was the catalyst that allowed the Lord's true church to be re-established on the earth beginning officially on April, 6, 1830. Can you possibly have any doubt that Moroni knew that very clearly when he wrote Chapter Eight of the Book of Mormon (a sub book of the Book of Mormon  Another Testament of Jesus Christ)?

Moroni certainly filled a key role in bringing about the restoration (or re-establishment of) the Lord's Church along with the true Gospel of Jesus Christ!

Now once again I bring up a familiar theme that you would have become familiar with if you have been reading my blog posts for even just this past year. I began in my very first post, as they stand now, commenting on how incorrect was some of the basic information given in the PBS Video Presentation:  THE MORMONS, broadcast the last day of April and the first day of May 2007. It was seen by millions then and by many, even afterwards.

In that video presentation there were some things said about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that were accurate and positive. However, here once again I point to the very incorrect statement made in that production by a Professor Alex Caldiero of Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah (U.S.A.).
Professor Alex Caldiero
"I hear Joseph Smith's voice every time I read it (The Book of Mormon). He was a farmer. He was young. He was unlettered and he put this all together. So you have this rough hewn kind of text...(clarification added)" Alex Caldiero, poet and scholar, Utah Valley University.
My response to what you blog readers just read is: "Professor, have you ever even read one paragraph of the Book of Mormon?

After anyone reading today in this post 41q, its presentation on Mormon Chapter Eight, could they in their right mind claim that the Book of Mormon was written (devised) by the unschooled and uneducated Joseph Smith?

The use of the Power and Spirit of Revelation may be something that is not familiar to those of you who are not members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

That gift of Revelation was the key to what Moroni did, both in inscribing the sacred record of their fallen people, along with his father, Mormon, upon Golden Plates to be translated in our day. And then many centuries later, as a resurrected person, Moroni performed his key role by that same power in preparing the young and unschooled prophet-to-be, Joseph Smith, to do what he was called of God to do during his relatively short life!

Moroni did his job so well in preparing this young prophet for his life's mission that Joseph Smith continued faithfully, without faltering in the exceedingly valiant service the Lord Jesus Christ directed him to provide. This was done in the face of great opposition, including being killed in the summer of 1844 by a drunk and angry mob after much sacrifice because of his faithfulness to very end of his relatively short life!

Thank you Moroni! Thank you Joseph AND MOST OF ALL, THANK YOU DEAR LORD, FOR YOUR ATONING SACRIFICE, AND IN BECOMING ABLE TO SAVE US ALL DEPENDING ON OUR FATHFULNESS!

Now I once again call on the understanding and learning of an LDS Scholar to enlighten us about something he has discovered in his very expert and profound research. (I Found this in a recent Mormon Times article in the Deseret News (Salt Lake City, Utah, U.S.A.)

Professor Caldiero, and anyone agreeing with your statement quoted above, please read carefully the following article. After doing so, if you continue to assert that the uneducated Joseph Smith devised and wrote the Book of Mormon, the rest of us will know clearly that you have never ever really read the Book of Mormon nor are you willing to listen to the sure evidence just presented by this or any other qualified and fully honest scholar, let alone asking God through humble prayer if the Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ is true!

I do wish that each of you good readers will seek a spirit of understanding as you search for truth, as you continue on in this blog post and in my future posts and in the blog posts of other Latter-day Saints or allowing the LDS missionaries to teach you in your homes. I also sincerely wish you all the very best in your lives whatever your religion may be!

Poor English, but good Hebrew — a divine hint of Book of Mormon truth?

Professor Royal Skousen's path-breaking work on the textual history of the Book of Mormon has yielded many important results. I've already mentioned his edition of "The Book of Mormon: The Earliest Text" (Yale, 2009), and the large, meticulously produced volumes he has published on the subject with the Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies (FARMS, now part of BYU's Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship) should not be overlooked. Here, though, I would like to examine one specific discovery that has emerged from his research:

In grammar, "conditional sentences" are sentences that discuss hypothetical situations and their consequences. Languages use a variety of constructions and verb forms to form such sentences. Conditional sentences typically contain two clauses: One is the condition clause, or "protasis," and the other is the consequence or result clause, the "apodosis." So, for example, we say, "If you cook it (condition), (then) I'll eat it (result)." Syntactically (for those who worry about such things), the condition is the subordinate clause, whatever its position in the sentence, while the result is the main clause.

A very common form of conditional sentence is the "if/then" construction, with the word "then" being optional: "If the newspaper keeps publishing Peterson's columns, I'll scream." What is absolutely not a common conditional form — in any period or dialect of English — is an "if/and" construction. Native speakers simply don't use it. We never say things like, "If the newspaper keeps publishing Peterson's columns, and I'll scream" or "If you cook it, and I'll eat it." Yet, although it never survives into English Bible translations, this construction is common in biblical Hebrew.

That is why it is significant to find "if/and" conditionals in the earliest English Book of Mormon, which presents itself as the translation of a record written by ancient Hebrews and their descendants. Joseph Smith would not have seen the Hebrew "if/and" conditional sentence in the King James Bible. Yet, in the original dictation manuscript of the Book of Mormon, 1 Nephi 17:50 reads "if he should command me that I should say unto this water be thou earth and it shall be earth." That "and" was removed when Oliver Cowdery produced the so-called "Printer's Manuscript," but similar constructions — too many to dismiss as coincidental — appeared in the 1830 first edition. Consider these specimens, from Helaman 12:13-21:
"yea and if he saith unto the earth move and it is moved"
"yea if he say unto the earth thou shalt go back that it lengthen out the day for many hours and it is done …"

"and behold also if he saith unto the waters of the great deep be thou dried up and it is done"

"behold if he saith unto this mountain be thou raised up and come over and fall upon that city that it be buried up and behold it is done"

"and if the Lord shall say be thou accursed that no man shall find thee from this time henceforth and forever and behold no man getteth it henceforth and forever"

"and behold if the Lord shall say unto a man because of thine iniquities thou shalt be accursed forever and it shall be done"

"and if the Lord shall say because of thine iniquities thou shalt be cut off from my presence and he will cause that it shall be so"

And notice how the very familiar passage recorded at Moroni 10:4 reads in the original printing:

". . . and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart with real intent having faith in Christ and he will manifest the truth of it unto you by the power of the Holy Ghost."
Such expressions — poor English, but good Hebrew — were eliminated by Joseph Smith himself in the second printing of the Book of Mormon. Though an unlettered man, he was a native speaker of English; he knew that these constructions were "wrong." What we see in them, I think, is "language contamination," leakage from the text's original language into the translation language — much the way Spanish/English interpreters sometimes slip into "Spanglish." But why would such things appear in "the most correct book?" Perhaps as a subtle divine hint that the original language of the Book of Mormon wasn't English.

Heresy, heresy, heresy! The Church Fathers would have rooted you false prophets out if this abominable heresy would have been propagated in the early Church years. Joseph Smith and Brigham Young were unrepentant heretics who deviated from orthodoxy with great relish and fervor. False teachers, heretics, the lot of them!
