TODAY'S THEME

I have placed a photograph of President Spencer W. Kimball at the head of this post as I join in with the rest of the membership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for the Thirtieth Year Commemoration of the June 8, 1978 announcement of a revelation received through the Church's Prophet, who at that time was President Kimball.

This Post was originally posted as My Post 11 on June 14, 2008

I must mention that the entire presidency of the Church and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles fully supported this revealed change in Church policy.

As a young married man, I began my career in Church employment as an Indian Seminary teacher with the assistance of Spencer W. Kimball, then a member of the Quorum of the Twelve whom I had met as a young missionary in Finland in 1954 when he visited the Finland, Helsinki Mission.

I later transferred into the Indian Placement Program of the Church, a program he was very instrumental in beginning. I became very aware of the love he had for the Lamanite people (of which Native Americans are a part). They were "oppressed and downtrodden" but Elder Kimball knew they would have a bright future because of Book of Mormon prophecies.

In the Book of Mormon, Father Lehi made the following prophecy which I believe, directly applies to the large numbers of Africans who were brought to the Americas as slaves as well as to the Europeans who migrated here.

II Nephi 1:5. But, said he, notwithstanding our afflictions, we have obtained a land of promise, a land which is choice above all other lands; a land which the Lord God hath covenanted with me should be a land for the inheritance of my seed. Yea, the Lord hath covenanted this land unto me, and to my children forever, and also all those who should be led out of other countries by the hand of the Lord.
6. Wherefore, I, Lehi, prophesy according to the workings of the Spirit which is in me, that there shall none come into this land save they shall be brought by the hand of the Lord. (emphasis added)
I had been aware of this scripture for many years and knew within myself that in the due time of the Lord African Americans would be eligible to hold the Priesthood of God and enjoy the Temple blessings in their fullness. Over the years I met many members of this Church who believed that also.

You may ask, How could the hand of the Lord be involved in the movement of African slaves to the Americas? I'm sure the Lord didn't condone the actions of the slave traders, but I believe that because of Father Lehi's prophecy, the Africans who were brought here, were supposed to come to these lands of freedom. The American Civil War was needed to give them more freedom. The Civil Rights Movement was needed for the same reason. Progress in applying liberty to all continues to be needed in the United States of America.

While writing this post I had a very special spiritual experience and was moved to tears when I thought about the ancestors of our African American brothers and sisters who were brought in slavery to this nation which is dedicated to freedom.

Some of the words of one of their beautiful and meaningful spirituals which I have heard the Mormon Tabernacle Choir sing over the years, came to my mind and heart as I was writing this post. I wasn't able to find their recording of this beautiful spiritual, but did find this beautiful version sung by Matus Tomko. I hope you are touched deeply by this Negro Spiritual which is so well performed:

I thought of George Washington Carver, a great black scientist who raised himself up from slavery to accomplish so much good. I thrive on peanut butter and I often remember that he made a significant study of the nutritional value of peanuts. I would write much more about this great people but space is gone.

Then just before being hired as an Indian Seminary teacher by the Church, I was employed in Sacramento, California (U.S.A.) as a Sacramento County Juvenile Probation Officer. One day, one of my fellow probation officers, Peter Brown (of African-American descent), and I, were assigned to drive from Sacramento to San Jose on Probation Department business. This gave us much time to talk.

I really liked working with Peter. He was a very good probation officer and an all-round good man. As I was driving us to San Jose, Peter, knowing as everybody else in our department did that I was LDS, questioned why the LDS Church did not allow Blacks to hold the Priesthood of God.

I told Peter that I was sure that the Priesthood of God would be given someday to all worthy males when the time was right. I just told him that the right time hadn't come yet. I told him that there was a time before the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the establishing of this Church that the time wasn't right for any man on the earth to have the Priesthood of God.

At one point in our drive to San Jose Peter told me that an older African-American woman had told him once that the Mormons believe that members of their race have no souls. I let him know there was no truth at all to that allegation.

I even suggested that one possible determining factor as to when the Priesthood would be given to men of every race, was there being a sufficient numbers of those already holding that sacred Priesthood who were willing for it to be given to men of every race. In other words, members of this Church had to more fully become the kind of accepting and loving people that I believe the Lord has always wanted His Church's members to be.

I don't remember Peter's reaction to that. I haven't seen Peter since 1962. I hope all is well with him. I hope he has learned more fully about this church and then was baptized into church membership. If that be the case I hope that he and his family are enjoying temple blessings. If so, hopefully they have done temple work for many of their ancestors, and figuratively, you, Peter, your own family to whom you would have been sealed and those ancestors of yours for whom you did temple work, would have therefore, crossed over together into camp ground.
Peter, are you out there? Please e-mail me when you finish reading this post if you have happened to find and read it. My e-mail address is given in the final section of this post.
I will end this post by telling all of you how I learned about the Priesthood Revelation received through President Spencer W. Kimball and how that affected me.

On June 8, 1978 while seated at my desk at the LDS Social Services, Kansas City, Missouri Agency, I received a phone call from our headquarters in Salt Lake City. I was told about the revelation and that made me very happy.

One of the services I was helping to provide in Missouri and in surrounding states, was the adoption of babies of birth mothers who contacted us desiring to place their babies for adoption. Before this phone call I typically told African American birth mothers we couldn't assist them and then helped them find an agency who could.

The reason for that explanation is that LDS couples at that time were very hesitant to adopt babies who wouldn't be eligible for temple sealings when they were old enough because of the denial of the Priesthood to males of their race.

After the official announcement of the Revelation on the Availability of Priesthood to All Races, I eagerly began to anticipate being helpful to African-American birth mothers who called for help. That did begin to happen and has continued with LDS Family Services.

That revelation allowed the holy priesthood to be bestowed upon all worthy male members of the Church regardless of race.

I was not surprised that it would have been Spencer W. Kimball who was the prophet who diligently sought the Lord's will on this crucial matter that would so fully impact a people who had been "oppressed and downtrodden" in the world generally. He had learned to love Native Americans, which love he had learned from his own father.

I enjoyed reading (on June 8th and 9th, 2008) in the newspaper and listening to reports on TV about the official Commemoration Program held by the Church in the Conference Center in Salt Lake City, Utah (U.S.A)

Blogger's Note: This post was originally posted on March 16, 2008 as my post #11. I have added the "TODAY'S THEME" title. There have been a few other additions and changes made to it. A notable addition is that of the video of the Spiritual, "Deep River."

The following link, when clicked upon, will allow you to view the latest Mormon Messages Video. You will find it very well done and hopefully will be applicable to you and to your particular needs.

TODAY'S THEME

The Bible and the Book of Mormon Stand Side by Side in Testifying of Jesus Christ -by Greg K. Olsen
You have just read words originally written in the Prophet Nephi's own language. He wrote what he wrote by the power of Prophecy and Revelation by which prophets whose words are recorded in the Holy Bible also very frequently wrote. Words spoken or written by that power are the Words of the Lord, or that which the prophet related in the Name of the Lord.
2 Nephi 29: 5 O ye Gentiles, have ye remembered the Jews, mine ancient covenant people? Nay; but ye have cursed them, and have hated them, and have not sought to recover them. But behold, I will return all these things upon your own heads; for I the Lord have not forgotten my people.
6 Thou fool, that shall say: A Bible, we have got a Bible, and we need no more Bible. Have ye obtained a Bible save it were by the Jews?
7 Know ye not that there are more nations than one? Know ye not that I, the Lord your God, have created all men, and that I remember those who are upon the isles of the sea; and that I rule in the heavens above and in the earth beneath; and I bring forth my word unto the children of men, yea, even upon all the nations of the earth?
8 Wherefore murmur ye, because that ye shall receive more of my word? Know ye not that the testimony of two nations is a witness unto you that I am God, that I remember one nation like unto another? Wherefore, I speak the same words unto one nation like unto another. And when the two nations shall run together the testimony of the two nations shall run together also.
9 And I do this that I may prove unto many that I am the same yesterday, today, and forever; and that I speak forth my words according to mine own pleasure. And because that I have spoken one word ye need not suppose that I cannot speak another; for my work is not yet finished; neither shall it be until the end of man, neither from that time henceforth and forever.
10 Wherefore, because that ye have a Bible ye need not suppose that it contains all my words; neither need ye suppose that I have not caused more to be written.
11 For I command all men, both in the east and in the west, and in the north, and in the south, and in the islands of the sea, that they shall write the words which I speak unto them; for out of the books which shall be written I will judge the world, every man according to their works, according to that which is written.
12 For behold, I shall speak unto the Jews and they shall write it; and I shall also speak unto the Nephites and they shall write it; and I shall also speak unto the other tribes of the house of Israel, which I have led away, and they shall write it; and I shall also speak unto all nations of the earth and they shall write it.
13 And it shall come to pass that the Jews shall have the words of the Nephites, and the Nephites shall have the words of the Jews; and the Nephites and the Jews shall have the words of the lost tribes of Israel; and the lost tribes of Israel shall have the words of the Nephites and the Jews.
14 And it shall come to pass that my people, which are of the house of Israel, shall be gathered home unto the lands of their possessions; and my word also shall be gathered in one. And I will show unto them that fight against my word and against my people, who are of the house of Israel, that I am God, and that I covenanted with Abraham that I would remember his seed forever.
That was a message the Lord knew then we would need now. I suggest we pay heed to it!

Now that I have made the Lord's pertinent words available to you through His book, The Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ, I will assist you to review strong evidence that illustrates very clearly that the Book of Mormon contains truths that only people living in Nephi's time (about 600 B.C.) could know. Also I have provided a video for you to view which provides sure evidence that the Book of Mormon was translated through the Power of God!

If you have really read the Book of Mormon as the title of this Blog asks, you would have really enjoyed, along with me, The A. Neal Maxwell Institute For Religious Scholarship located at Brigham Young University (BYU-Provo, UT, U.S.A.) Daniel C. Peterson Fireside Presentation at the Olivewood Book Store in Provo on April 10, 2008. When one really reads the Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ, as many times as I have been privileged to do, he or she will have recalled much from their reading of this Book of Books, during Dr. Peterson's captivating presentation. Here is something I remembered while listening to him.

Sometime, a number of years ago, while studying the Book of Mormon, I noticed that Nephi tells us his father's family's travel direction in Southern Arabia changed to due East at a place named Nahom (I Nephi 16:34). I also noticed then, that before and afterwards, most all locations on their long route were given names by Father Lehi and his fellow travelers, such as the Valley of Lemuel, named after his second oldest son and the place by the seashore they named "Bountiful" because of "its much fruit." Dr. Peterson really enjoyed telling his audience about how this Arabian site, Nahom, still bears the same name it did in the day of the prophet, Lehi.

Although Dr. Dan didn't mention it, I remember reading a report from a BYU researcher who reported that there is an established ancient burial ground there. Co-incidentally Lehi assisted in burying his relative, Ishmael at Nahom.

You will enjoy the convincing description our fireside presenter made of all this evidence which supports that which Joseph Smith told us right along; that this record was made by Hebrew travelers in about 600 B.C. As Dr. Peterson asks, "How could Joseph Smith or any other person in our day, except for a possible Arabian Bedouin who possibly didn't read or write, come up with that ancient, accurate place name (Nahom)."

That is just one of many items Dr. Dan gives to convince us that no-one in Joseph Smith's day could come up with the information we find in the Book of Mormon about such accurate details as that of the ancient Hebrew mode of olive orchard cultivation, and details of experiences Book of Mormon people had in the Seismic Disaster described in 3 Nephi that occurred just before the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ appeared to the relatively small Nephite-Lamanite population that had escaped death at that cataclysmic occasion.

Another matter that Dr. Peterson so ably discussed is how Hebrew language characteristics regularly showed up in the English translation the Lord gave Joseph Smith through direct revelation. He told us that many of those Hebrew language characteristics were changed later by the Prophet Joseph or others in Church leadership to improve the quality of English language used in this divine translation. (Original manuscripts that are still available of the translation, show some of those Hebrew language characteristics).

Dr. Dan is so convincing. I have noticed that there were no direct responses on the Internet afterwards to the facts that were presented by him that evening. There is no plausible way to dispute the facts that were given us by Dr. Peterson that evening.

It will be very much worth your while to watch this video. You will be viewing Part 2 when you begin. I put Part 2 first because it deals with the Translation of the Book of Mormon which I deemed important to the theme which I had set for this blog post. There are five parts to this lecture which lasted about an hour and a half altogether.
After Part 2 ends you can select one of the other Parts by clicking on its image at the bottom of the screen. You will notice that You Tube has included other videos given by other presenters. For the purposes of this blog post please click only on images of Dr. Dan Peterson each time in the order you choose to follow. I recommend that you follow the numerical sequence in order once you have finished Part 2, starting with Part 1, then going to Part 3 and so on.

At the bottom of each image of Dr. Peterson you will read the number of that particular Part. Please view each of his five presentation Parts. It will be very much worth your while to you, according to your schedule, to view each of them, even if you have to come back to this post later.

Turn on your computer's speaker now! Click on the arrow on Dr. Peterson's chest on the screen here.
Joseph Smith Translating the Book of Mormon with the assistance of His scribe, Oliver Cowdery. -by Del Parson
There was something special that I picked up on that you should have heard as you viewed Part 2 (the Part that comes on first) of the video. I really appreciated Dr. Dan's enthusiasm and conviction as to why we should believe the statements of relatives and friends of Josephs Smith's in the Harmony, PA area regarding the actual manner of translating of the Book of Mormon rather than what the sophisticated, modern, easy living, computer wielding critics describe. Our presenter described in great detail things that were reported by these local people regarding the translation.

He also pointed out to us that all of these local folks were down-to-earth, practical and pragmatic farmers who really had to hustle to keep alive. He asks: whose statements are the most credible, the modern easy-living critics or those Nineteenth century "down-to-earth people" who really were aware of things round about them and knew what they were talking about.

I really appreciated Dr. Dan's enthusiasm for this great portion of convincing information he gave us throughout his captivating, scholarly, presentation. He apologized beforehand about having to read much of his material, but that apology wasn't needed because of his captivating enthusiasm. I look forward to future presentations to be made by this well-informed scholar. He could read all of them as far as I am concerned.

TODAY'S THEME
Joseph Smith -by David Lindsley
This painting is of the prophet Joseph Smith who translated the Book of Mormon by the power of God.

In viewing Part 1 of the "Mormons" produced and shown by PBS in May of 2007, I was appalled by their treatment and neglect of the Book of Mormon. In it, a so-called, "scholar" described this Book of Books as flawed literature. I heard him say that every time he reads from the Book of Mormon he sees evidence in its pages of the rough frontier nature of Joseph Smith who he supposes wrote that book. With his saying that, I have to question whether he has ever read the Book of Mormon. I have never seen such evidence anywhere in that book.

Hugh Nibley, a great Mormon scholar, now deceased, was a great authority on the Book of Mormon and knew personally a number of its chief critics. He often said that Book of Mormon critics are all well known for their never having read it.

If I were to interview the writer, editor and producer of that PBS production, Helen Whitney, I would ask her: "Why have you allowed such statements to be made about the Prophet Joseph Smith, Jr. and the Book of Mormon, without letting a believing Mormon give his or her point of view of the matter?

My present purpose is to give you just one short example of something from the Book of Mormon that illustrates that it could not have been written by a frontiers boy with very little education.

Please read this scripture:
II Nephi 2:25: Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy.
Several years ago I read a report of a scholarly man from the Near East, who was possibly Jewish, who became overwhelmed emotionally when he heard for the the first time ever, that verse read in a meeting of some kind at BYU where he was an invited guest. This verse no doubt helped him as it can help us, to come to grips with the true purpose of the Fall of Adam.

That visitor at BYU may or may not have read the verse that follows the one quoted above, but it is very significant and is an illustration that the Book of Mormon is what its full title says it is: The Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ. Now I ask you, the reader of this blog, "Have you really read the Book of Mormon?" And if you have, have you heeded the exhortation of the Book of Mormon prophet, Moroni?

2 Nephi 2:26 And the Messiah cometh in the fulness of time, that he may redeem the children of men from the fall. And because that they are redeemed from the fall they have become free forever, knowing good from evil; to act for themselves and not to be acted upon, save it be by the punishment of the law at the great and last day, according to the commandments which God hath given.

Moroni 10:4 And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost. (emphasis added)
Is the Book of Mormon the reflection of the thinking of an uneducated frontiers boy or is it instead the inspired translation of the writings of ancient prophets, beginning with Nephi, son of Lehi, who was born in Jerusalem, who, with his family, migrated to the Americas in 600 B.C. under the guidance of God? I bare my personal witness it is the latter.

38i - Part 2 - "For if They Humble Themselves Before Me, and Have Faith in Me, Then Will I Make Weak Things Become Strong Unto Them." Ilene Touchin Begay's Life Summary.

TODAY'S THEME

Painting: Heinrich Hofmann
Jesus Christ -by Heinrich Hofmann
Ether 12: 27 And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.
Those words of the Lord Jesus Christ written by the prophet, Moroni, can cause each of us to realize that those weaknesses we may recognize in ourselves which sorely bother us and can even make us feel unworthy, can actually, when we admit we have them and then turn to our Savior in faith and humility for support and strengthening, can cause something amazing happen to us. We begin to see that those weaknesses have actually become strengths!

I believe the life history summary of the dear lady you will learn about in today's post will provide you with examples of how the Lord's true promise quoted above, will be fulfilled when His humility standard is fully met.

Just in case you would like to read the complete chapter of the Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ from which TODAY'S THEME is taken, I have provided a scriptural reference below so you may read it from your own Book of Mormon either now or after you have finished reading the rest of this blog post.

Ether 12: 1-41

In my just previous post, 38i - Part 1 we got to know John C. Begay. In this post we will enjoy getting to better know his dear wife, Ilene Touchin Begay.

Ilene Touchin Begay

John C. Begay found these words of Elder Boyd K. Packer very true just like other teachings of Brother Packer that he had incorporated into his being,
“When you see the right girl for you to marry, you will know it.”
John and Ilene grew up in the same area and had eyes for each other, and when the time was right, John knew where to look for his bride.

Ilene was born May 5, in Coppermine, Arizona, the sixth of thirteen children born to Alma and Kenneth Touchin. She was that child whose sweet spirit crept in and touched her parents’souls in a unique way. Her joyful countenance and devotion uplifted them. Ilene truly loved and honored her parents. When it was apparent that the family needed help at home, it was natural that Ilene would volunteer for the home duty, allowing the other siblings to go off to school and to other pursuits.

Ilene had no formal schooling, but was mentored by her parents in herding and caring for their large herds of sheep and cattle, weaving rugs, cooking, helping relatives, and other tasks necessary to sustain life on the reservation. She and her brother John were the main caretakers, alongside their parents, of the homestead and ranch that kept the family going. The Navajo language is still her only manner of speaking. (The individuals and settings in the photos I've used here only represent Ilene Begay and a few things she has done and where she has done them. Neither Ilene nor her home are pictured in them.)

Prayer and faith were also natural to Ilene. Her husband tells about a technique Ilene used in herding the sheep to keep them going in the right direction. She would attach a bailing wire handle to a tin can filled with rocks and then swing the can and fling it to a vital spot near the sheep to scare them into the desired direction. About 20 years ago while she was with the herd, she threw such a can and when she went to pick the can up, she had a strong prompting, “Don’t pick it up!” She then backed away as a rattle snake crawled from under the bush on which the can sat.

Ilene was baptized in 1965 in Tuba City by Elders Court and Robert.

Mesa, Arizona Temple

Ilene and John were married in a traditional Navajo ceremony in 1966 and later were married for time and eternity in the Mesa, Arizona Temple. They have reared a righteous posterity--four children, all active in the church and successful in their careers.

The extended family says she is the one in the family that regularly visits her relatives. She is the one most likely to show up in time of need, and the one who brings treats and feels comfortable eating with or staying over with her extended family. By family members, she is characterized as so good, helpful, and friendly. Her husband describes her as a woman of strong faith who lives up to her beliefs.

The stake center building and fourth ward buildings in Page, Arizona have a special luster and polish under the loving custodial care of Ilene Begay. This has been part of her stewardship for 20 years. She also has worked in the laundry room at the St. George Temple for eight years, and each Friday, after completing her job in the laundry, she does temple proxy work.

Ilene’s current ward calling is teaching in the Relief Society, an assignment she has had for six years.

In a recent mission conference after John C. had accepted a call as a counselor in the Arizona-Phoenix mission presidency, John and Ilene spoke to the missionaries. It was reported that Ilene spoke in her native tongue, and the spirit was so strong that those who could not understand her words, knew of her testimony and were deeply touched.

Ilene and John are an eye-catching pair, Ilene, a slim figure with a poised manner in immaculate traditional dress and tasteful turquoise and silver jewelry, smooth hair pulled back from her lovely classic face, walking next to her husband, wearing western-styled shirt and jeans, cravat tie, turquoise buckle, high-topped boots, and wide-brimmed hat.

Ilene’s older siblings starting with the oldest are John, Rex, Mary, Sue, and Patty. Ilene is next, followed by James, Charlie, Leona, Priscilla, Kenny, Julius, and Jeanne.

I now give each of you readers of my blog post the opportunity to read again TODAY'S THEME. Then I will summarize for you why I feel so strongly that this scripture applies to Ilene Touchin Begay:
Ether 12: 27 And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.
The Following is Blogger Neil Birch's Review of Incidences in Ilene's life where it can be seen that her weaknesses became her strengths.

Possible weaknesses the Lord had "blessed" Ilene with:

She was the sixth of thirteen children. Life could be quite challenging to a middle child in such a large family. She might have become very dependent on her older siblings and domineering over the younger ones and even rebelled against her parents. One Behavioral theory that is widely held is that middle children often have lots of problems.
Instead: She was that child "whose sweet spirit crept in and touched her parents’ souls in a unique way. Her joyful countenance and devotion uplifted them. Ilene truly loved and honored her parents. When it was apparent that the family needed help at home, it was natural that Ilene would volunteer for the home duty, allowing the other siblings to go off to school and other pursuits."
Speaking only Navajo could have made her feel inferior to those in her family and others who spoke both Navajo and English. Three of their children even learned another language while serving missions for their church.
Instead, Ilene was capable of communicating her deepest feelings, such as her testimony of the Restored Gospel in Navajo to others who didn't comprehend her words. But they did feel the power of her testimony when she bore it. It was obvious to those who knew Ilene that she loved the Lord.
Your having read her husband John's life story already, you may have thoughts that he was the strong one in this marriage. He spoke English. He achieved an education and became a member of the Lord's true church and served in many important church capacities. John even was blessed by a strong confirmation of the Spirit that Ilene was the one he should marry (just as Elder Boyd K. Packer had promised would happen.)

She served in important church assignments too. However, her superb strength that she brought to their marriage was shown by the following which you would have read in the previous post. Because of how strongly John was letting Ilene down, she could have divorced him:
While the marriage was mostly wonderful, John C. continued to drink occasionally through the second year of marriage much to his new wife’s disgust. She expressed disappointment and anger to her parents and even vowed to leave him if he didn’t stop the behavior. In the winter of 1967, after a short drinking binge he wrecked his pickup in the snow and totaled the vehicle. He was fined and jailed overnight. Coming home in deep despair he promised he would never drink again. Instead of not trusting his promises and refusing to forgive him, Ilene trusted John. The next Sunday he was back in Church with his wife and little daughter armed with a personal commitment that he never broke.
(A note to) Elder Packer from this Church Member blogger: "I enjoyed so much reading how you, through the inspiration of the Lord, told John C. Begay that he would know from the Lord who he was to marry!
( Neil Birch's note to) John: "Congratulations on your following the inspiration from the Lord that you should marry Ilene. You know very well how much strength the Lord gave Ilene despite some of the weaknesses she may possibly have had. John, I don't think you think of her having weaknesses! I tend to agree with you! In any case, The Lord has made any weaknesses she may have had, into strengths as He promised through His prophet, Moroni!
Here is a follow-up on the just previous strength I mentioned: Ilene, if you hadn't stood up to John fearlessly as he was continuing in his drinking, it wouldn't have been possible for you (and John and others of the family who might have been there with you) to feel great joy as you watched him in his capacity as a temple sealer, seal a dear daughter to her husband for time and all eternity in the House of the Lord!

Here is a summary of several other strengths that the Lord developed in Ilene despite her potential weaknesses:

The Lord inspired her to not approach the bush where her "sheep herding can" had lodged on top of it, thus avoiding being bitten by a poisonous snake that was hidden in the bush.

Serving as a Relief Society teacher for at least six years in a row says much for the strengths the Lord God gave his dear Ilene Touchin Begay.

He also appears to have given her sufficient strength, energy and desire sufficient to both serve in the Temple laundry room and to do temple ordinances on behalf of the dead also.

Then I can see that despite your having been most likely raised in a Navajo hogan that had a dirt floor, that when, at least, for twenty years, you Ilene, were in charge of keeping the Page Stake Center and Fourth Ward LDS Chapel clean, they always had a "special luster and polish to them." That says so much about your dedication to serving the Lord and His Church with all your heart, might mind and soul as He asks of us.

TODAY'S THEME

Jacob (Israel) Blessing Joseph -by Harry Anderson
The blessing given by Father Jacob who is also known by the name, Israel, included the promise that Joseph's posterity would continue throughout the history of the world. The Nephite Nation is descended from Joseph, a great grandson of Abraham. The prophet, Nephi, son of Lehi made the prophecy below in the name of the Lord regarding the descendants of Israel (Jacob), Joseph's father. This includes the descendants of the Nephite Nation in our day - the Lamanites, which includes, among many others,  American Indians:
The Book of Mormon, 2 Nephi 29:14
14 And it shall come to pass that my people, which are of the house of Israel, shall be gathered home unto the lands of their possessions; and my word also shall be gathered in one. And I will show unto them that fight against my word and against my people, who are of the house of Israel, that I am God,
and that I covenanted with Abraham that I would remember his seed forever.
(emphasis added)
The Lamanites of our day, also known as Native Americans, and by various other names, are indigenous groups of citizens of Western Hemispheric nations of our day and time who are presently being gathered in by the Lord as they are willing and prepared. Also gathered together to make God's word unified, are the Holy Bible and The Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ. The Book of Mormon was translated in our day by the power of God so it could function side by side with the Holy Bible.
Before I begin the main portion of this blog post I desire to pose a question to those of you dear readers who may have met someone who alleges that The Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ, was just made up, fabricated, by Joseph Smith, or by someone else before it was first published in 1830 in Palmyra, New York, U.S.A.
The question I pose is this: Why would any such imagined deceivers go "out on a limb" by including in such an account, amazing prophecies which state that the modern day descendants of a formerly righteous people would be restored to the exceedingly righteous state their ancestors had previously enjoyed and then lost.
According to the Book of Mormon those ancestors fell spiritually and temporally after having lived for two and a half centuries (A.D 34 to about A.D. 284) in a very righteous manner, which they were able to do after having been taught personally, through both precept and example, by our Resurrected Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ who visited among them in their homeland in the Western Hemisphere in A.D. 34.
This record prophetically tells us that the descendants of this people would subsequently, in the Latter-days (in our day and time), be gathered back into the fold of Christ by a righteous people who possess the book written by the ancestors of that chosen people.
Before it is studied carefully, true history can often appear to be more unbelievable than fabrication can appear to be!
That history and those prophecies are true. They weren't made up by deceivers! I suggest you humbly ask the Lord about the truthfulness of the history depicted in these pictures. He will tell you!

The truth is that the fabrication theorists are wrong! Joseph Smith, was specially prepared by the Spirit of the Lord Jesus Christ, and one of His angels. That angel, Moroni, delivered the record to Joseph who then correctly translated the entire Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ into the English language. The guidance and inspiration provided by that book is sorely needed by those of us living in these difficult days and serves as a strong support to the Holy Bible!
Today's descendants of that formerly very great but then fallen nation, have been and still are right now being gathered by the Lord through the instrumentality of His only authorized church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and they most likely number, counting both the living and those who have since died, in the hundreds of thousands! The prophecies made of this in the Book of Mormon have been and are continuing to be fulfilled!
I have had the privilege of showing in my past ten blog posts that which has actually been happening among a good number of Native Americans living in the U.S.A! They are marvelous descendants of Book of Mormon prophets and their people, who have been and continue to be, recovered by the hand of the Lord from their fallen state (living without the Gospel of Jesus Christ) which was brought about by the apostacy of their forefathers.
Now you will have the privilege of reading another actual example of the "Gathering of Modern Day Israel" in this post. The Book of Mormon was truly written by inspired prophets who constantly used the Spirit of Prophecy and Revelation to fortell the future for their descendants' and our benefit!
Today's post (38i - Part 1) and the next post (38i - Part 2) give us an example of a Native American couple of our day who were lovingly and tenderly gathered in by the sure arm of the Lord, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Their's is an additional example of the fulfillment of the prophesy given in the 49th Section of the Doctrine and Covenants:

49: 24 But before the great day of the Lord shall come, Jacob shall flourish in the wilderness, and the Lamanites shall blossom as the rose.

25 Zion shall flourish upon the hills and rejoice upon the mountains, and shall be assembled together unto the place which I have appointed.
John C. Begay and his wife, Ilene Touchin Begay

____________

The upbeat LDS Seminary Coordinator at the Intermountain Indian School located at Brigham City, Utah was temporarily perplexed on the first day of class that fall of 1955 or 1956. He had four John Begays in the class. Then inspiration struck! He pointed out the John on his left and stated, “My young friend, you are John A. Begay!” Then, looking across the row, he indicated, “John B. Begay is your name!” The John on the back row left was designated John C. Begay, and finally, the teacher’s eye settled on John D. Begay in the red shirt immediately to his right.

All four Johns happily accepted their teacher’s creative method of distinguishing between them. Hopefully, the other John Begays benefited as much as John C. from this teacher’s instruction and special interest in them.

Elder Boyd K. Packer Loves the Book of Mormon
This impactful teacher was Boyd K. Packer whose reputation as a unique instructor is legendary among the approximately 14 million members of the LDS Church.

In addition to the regular weekly religious curriculum, John C. Begay and other Indian seminary youth were warmly welcomed into their teacher’s home on many weekends for joyful family fellowship and a strong righteous example. John C. remembers,
“After the Sunday meeting we would go to their home and they would feed us real good. Elder Packer and Donna treated us like their kids and we would spend the whole afternoon with all their family.”
In his early gospel learning from Boyd Packer, four things stood out for John C.:
A. “He advised me about dating and marriage. The most important thing I remember was his counsel to be spiritually prepared so that when the right young woman came along I would know it and feel it.”
B. “Second, he taught me the importance of tending to business before pleasure. If I had work that needed to be done, get it done first and then it was okay to play.”
C. “He talked a lot about having a good attitude, saying that my success in life was based upon keeping positive and not getting discouraged.”
D. “The fourth teaching I remember was about leadership ability. He gave me a lot of hope when he told me that I had leadership ability and a strong potential for succeeding in life.”
Many seminary students are impressed by the teachings of their mentors. Although young John C. Begay didn’t know the meaning of a paradigm shift in behavior, these insightful words caused a mighty change in him. Elder Packer’s teachings left a King Benjamin-like impact on this youthful student’s heart and mind, which, except for a short period, has lasted throughout his life.

Progressing at the Intermountain Indian Seminary, he was baptized by Bennie C. Joe, the student body president of the school and confirmed by Don Hunsaker, another golden Seminary man whose later stewardship was mission president in Navajo Country.

Dean L. Larsen, who served as a member of The Seventy and George Durrant, the respected author, were other prominent Seminary influences.

Another early significant role model was USU student and returned missionary, fellow Navajo, Bahe Billie, who came every Sunday to assist with the Aaronic Priesthood responsibilities of the Lamanite branch at the school. John C. states,
“We learned a lot from him and it was important for me to see a fellow Navajo doing well in the gospel.”
At that time young Begay welcomed Mormonism’s unique perspective with the passion that a daffodil or a crocus might welcome the first warm sun rays of springtime. And once he had firmly grasped that bright nourishment he let it unfold into full blossom. Grabbing hold of the gospel plow, he passionately held tightly to it wanting it to be his anchor for the rest of his life.

John C. would find that spiritual dreams are often thwarted for a time by the ups and downs of living found in the turbulence of reservation life.

On the far western corner of the Navajo Reservation south of Coppermine, Az., in the memorable year of the Pearl Harbor attack, Oct. 16, 1941, a baby boy was born into the home of Cecil B. Begay and Susie Neztsosie.

John was the seventh child of twelve Begay children whose extended family seemed to include about 100 sheep, 50 cows, and 20 horses.

The parents were raised before schools arrived in their part of the reservation thus they lacked educational opportunity and failed to learn English. Being parents of superb character and above average self-discipline they were able to eschew and disdain alcohol and gambling, two of the chief corrupters of residents in that area of Navajoland.

Cecil Begay served as medicine-man who three or four times a year sojourned off the reservation to earn the welcome salary on the Santa Fe Rail Road. Tasks such as water-man, flagger, and replacer of worn-out railroad ties became his daily duties as he survived in the Anglo world despite knowing little English.

Father Begay, a noted local free-enterpriser, was also a part-time moccasin maker. Mother Begay had a reputation for her weaving prowess. Her forte was ability with the difficult, unique, double weave. Assisted by her sister they would produce four or five smaller rugs or one larger rug (either 8x10 or 8x12) in one year.

The Begay family was blessed to own one of the choice farm sites in the western Navajo lands. Located on their ranch was that most precious of all desert blessings—water, yes W-A-T-E-R—almost in abundance. In a section of their ranch was a verdant, serene canyon—a spot of greenery- where Willow Springs is located. Its waters flow all of the year around. How the family loved to gather there!

It is not surprising that John C.’s first youthful memories relate to this idyllic place.
”As a very young boy about the first thing my mind can remember is doing the hoeing and irrigating work in the corn fields. Having three reservoirs and our beautiful stream I remember feeling really blessed. We raised corn, squash and my favorites—the green melons.”
Secondary memories, not quite as pleasant, included herding the sheep, gathering the horses in the morning, taking the same animals to water later in the day, and hauling the drinking water by wagon team from the windmill.

Though his association with the church spans nearly 50 years, brother Begay’s first contact with the church actually occurred when he was at the age of twelve.
“I was staying at Willow Springs with my grandma, Winona Sagannisto Nez Tsosie when two LDS missionaries came to our Hogan. They told us if we would be faithful Mormons, we could own a lot of sheep. I never forgot that. They also showed us a Book of Mormon. This was the first time I’d heard anything about it.”
Some may wonder why young John C. began his formal education so late in life. Was it because of his love for the farm-work and serene setting of Willow Springs? Was it because he felt safe and secure at the Begay ranch and wasn’t quite certain what strange surprises the schools and activity of the dominant society might bring? Or was it because his spirited work ethic and optimistic attitude were much respected by his grateful parents who strove to keep him around the ranch as long as possible?

Intermountain Indian School was chosen because of the curriculum which featured high school graduation while taking courses in English and a five or six year vocational program for over-age students offering training in welding, heavy equipment, carpentry, and warehouse skills.

John C.’s older brother had attended Intermountain previously and had already been baptized. As a spiritual bonus for John, his discerning mother had enrolled him in LDS seminary, but he had not yet attended as he went with his friends to Catholic and Nazarene services as he adapted to his new scholastic environment.

One day his class was interrupted by a knock, and an embarrassed and puzzled John C. Begay was told by his teacher that a gentleman in the hallway wished to speak with him. Worried about which school rule or law he might have broken, he meekly left the room. He felt a king-sized relief to see a smiling Bilagaana (white man) awaiting him! Following a friendly introduction, warm handshake, and cordial invitation to attend class by branch president Don C. Hunsaker, his church education began with John C. assigned to the seminary class of Elder Boyd K. Packer.

“That’s where I was converted to the LDS Church. My mother had secretly signed me up for Seminary which became my favorite class along with P.E. What do I remember about their teaching? It was mainly from the Book of Mormon. I recollect a lot of stuff about Lehi and Nephi and the bad wars. Our teachers showed us a lot of film strips with dead bodies lying around. We had color slides about the prophets too. And I got involved with the beginning of the Tom Trails film series. My favorite seminary lesson was about Jesus appearing at the Temple in Bountiful.”

“I was twenty years old when I graduated in 1960 and headed to Window Rock for my first real job. Because of my warehouse training, the Navajo Tribe offered me a position there.” He and three other young Navajo friends shared a humble Gallup apartment and he attended a local Gallup LDS branch where he served in the Sunday School Presidency. Then he missed attending a few Sunday meetings and before he knew it, the dragon of church inactivity became his mentor.

Wanting to be closer to home and have a better wage, he transferred to the tribal warehouse in Tuba City for about ten months where he was mostly a devout non-churchgoer. His happiness revolved around the weekends spent at his boyhood home near Coppermine.

When asked about his dating, John explained, “I didn’t do any of that dating thing. I was pretty shy around the women.”

The employment outlook changed. “I left Tuba (City) and came home to Coppermine because there was a reduction in force at the Tuba warehouse. I could have stayed, but I chose to leave, I didn’t like the warehouse job that much. What I really wanted to do was drive trucks—the bigger the better.”

“Trucking became exciting for me while I was working in Window Rock. The foreman would send me out with big loads, hauling pre-fabricated houses and things like that. On the way back, the drivers would often jump out in Gallup and have me drive the eighteen- wheeler back to Window Rock. I liked doing the driving a lot. So, I quit the warehouse to get into trucking.”

“Romance, true love and marriage is the thing which happened next in my life. At age twenty-five I had talked with and kind of had my eye on Ilene Touchin from the neighborhood. I remembered what Elder Packer had said about courtship and dating, stating that when the right woman crossed my path I would ‘know it and feel it.’

I hadn’t really talked seriously with Ilene to find out if she was the one or not. One day I walked over to her and we started making a conversation and something wonderful happened to me just like Elder Packer had promised. It was like a little earthquake inside of me. I guess my heart quaked and tossed as if a herd of buffalo had stampeded through it.”

Another factor in the marriage revolved around John C.’s parents and their worries about his lack of church activity and some of the bad habits he had picked up in the meantime. His mom and dad knew he needed a good strong woman to reactivate him and keep him on the straight and narrow.

Ilene Touchin was the woman to do the job. The Begays offered the Touchins several cows and various turquoise necklaces and Concho belts and five days later the marriage was performed.

The Mesa, Arizona Temple

John C. remembers: “Both sets of parents were happy with our friendship, so we got married, first in Coppermine, and then later in the Mesa Temple. Our first home was the one we live in right now.”

While the marriage was mostly wonderful John C. continued to drink occasionally through the second year of marriage much to his new wife’s disgust.

“I prayed and asked the Lord for forgiveness. I realized that through the Atonement I could be clean and a new man again.” The next Sunday he was back in Church with his wife and little daughter armed with a personal commitment that he never broke. John C. found a job driving a flat-bed truck with the Home Improvement Department of the Navajo Tribe, hauling construction materials.

“It was a good job for which I was paid by the mile. In 1970 I joined the Teamsters Union which increased my salary more.” Progressing in his career, he then drove truck for several of the big trucking firms which were doing highway construction on the reservation.

After working for about 30 years, John C. developed back problems and in 1996 was forced to retire. Driving the big units still has a lot of meaning for him “I really miss trucking! I think about it all the time.”

The Church callings of John C. Begay make an impressive list which demonstrates a valiant religiosity above and beyond the call of duty. After his reactivation early in the marriage he served as MIA counselor, Sunday School counselor, and Elder’s Quorum counselor, before being called to be the branch president of the Coppermine Branch.

Page Stake High Councilor was his chief duty for the next three years followed by service as branch president in the Cedar Ridge Branch, 35 miles distant, for two years. He served in that position for two years. Next, he returned to become the Coppermine Branch President, with this tour of duty lasting for five years.

His next challenging calling was as first counselor in the Page Stake Presidency to J. Ballard Washburn, a prominent medical doctor. Gifford, the other counselor was a dentist, and a lawyer served as the stake secretary.
“The stake presidency seemed like a group of very powerful men to this former truck-driver. In our meetings, there were times I didn’t understand what they were talking about, but afterward, President Washburn would summarize to make sure I understood everything, and again the Seminary teaching of Elder Packer would comfort me as I remembered his kind words about my leadership ability and excellent potential, and his idea that my attitude—keeping it positive, was the key thing.”
After several years of stalwart service Begay was once again a stake high councilor, followed by being appointed the first bishop of the Page Fourth Ward, the Lamanite Ward.

In many cases John C. served in multiple callings, serving three times as High Priest Group Leader and three times as Ward Mission Leader, concurrent with being the Page Stake Mission President.

Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah (U.S.A.)
A Close-up View of the Tabernacle on Temple Square
John C.'s longest and possibly most demanding calling has lasted for twenty-eight years. This has been his ongoing opportunity to attend every general conference and translate the proceedings into the Navajo language. "The translation job is a lot easier now, Conference used to be held on Friday also." General Conference was held in the Tabernacle on Temple Square for many years.

When asked about the almost impossible job of researching Navajo genealogy, John acknowledged,
“I’ve done a lot of it. Serving under Pres. Washburn I was given the responsibility over the Temple and genealogy work. I realized if I was going to get anyone else to do this important work, I would need to do mine first.

I looked at census records at the Navajo capitol in Window Rock, and in Tuba City. I talked to elderly relatives, toured graveyards and cemeteries, and I even read through Jacob Hamblin’s book looking for names. I was able to find information four generations on both sides. On my father’s side I go back to a grandfather named Old Arrow. On my mother’s lineage, Hosteen Nez Tsosie is my grandparent.

“Doing Family History research has been a very spiritual work. As I have been searching and praying to find a name, the name just comes to me. I have done about fifty names of my kindred dead.”
Is it possible that you have submitted more names for Temple work than any other Navajo, John was asked? “I don’t’ know. I do have seven more names to turn in.”

The St. George, Utah Temple
John received a new calling about one year ago. “I had been serving as an Ordinance Worker in the St. George Temple for the past six years. Every Friday my wife and I would drive the 130 round-trip miles, participate in some sessions, stay overnight, and participate in other Temple services on Saturday morning and then return home. A year ago the Temple president called me into his office and extended a call to be a Temple Sealer. Elder Jeffrey Holland set me apart.”
“My favorite and most spiritual calling in the Church has been Temple Work.”
“I was officiating in a session when four Navajo relatives in traditional dress entered the endowment room and seated themselves on the back row.

From photographs I immediately recognized one of the ladies as my deceased aunt who had passed away in 1942. The others present were her husband, mother, and father. They appeared to be middle aged, about forty. They remained seated during the whole time.
Afterward, I asked Patty Etcitty, who was assisting with the session if she had seen them. She had not.
John talked about his very unusual hobbies.
“I often think of Elder Packer’s counsel about business before pleasure. There are three change of pace things I love to do. First, I love to visit people--especially the drunks and heavy drinkers who hang-out in Page. I love to go sit down and talk with them. A lot of people don’t want to be around people who are drinking but I do. I try to give them hope by counseling them that there are turning points in their lives and that they can change."
“Sometimes drinkers beg me for money but I never give out cash. One brother begged me for gas money so we went to the service station together and tried to fill his tank. Guess what? It would only take thirty- seven cents worth. When they say they are hungry I take them to a restaurant and buy them a meal."
“Another thing I love is missionary work. I am the mission leader and Rex Lane, my brother-in-law and I take turns going around with the missionaries.”
“I also love spending time with the others who work in the Temple. Many of them are professors, lawyers, and school officials who have impressive resumes. But there in the temple, all dressed in white, there is a great fellowship, and we all feel equal.”
“Of all the places in the world, my favorite place is Salt Lake City. I have no intention of ever leaving the United States. I love Salt Lake City because of General Conference and Priesthood Leadership Meetings, and the spiritual atmosphere there.”
When John was asked about his philosophy of life, he remarked. "Obedience is the most important philosophy of life. Life is good; I love every minute of it! My health is good except for a little blood sugar thing."

SUMMARY

A wonderful combination of little things coalesced in the life of a first year Indian seminary student which changed his vision, ideas of life, and his, until then, mostly meager spiritual outlook. “And out of small things proceedeth that which is great.” D. and C.: 64:33

As Elder Boyd K. Packer changed the name of John Begay to John C. Begay it had many more implications than that of merely adding one letter to a young man’s identity. This simple and subtle act was the first in a series of happenings, influences, and examples that touched a young, impressionable, Navajo boy’s heart and thus transformed his life.

The seminary teachings about finding the right young woman to marry, business before pleasure, the crucial importance of having a positive attitude, and the concept that he had leadership ability and a keen potential became both a Liahona and a source of self-confidence for John C. Begay.

John’s many mentors, examples, and experiences have molded his sterling character. He has lived a life of service and obedience. Few church priesthood holders throughout the world have had such a myriad and quantity of callings. His accomplishment in serving as a language translator of general conferences during a tenure of twenty-eight years is also remarkable.

In 2006, John C. Begay was called as a counselor in the Arizona-Phoenix mission over the Southwest Indian Reservations.

As a footnote, this blogger, J. Neil Birch, mentions that he had the special privilege of serving as a teacher during the 1962-63 school year in the LDS Indian Seminary that served the LDS Indian students studying at the Intermountain Indian School. I served under Indian Seminary Principal, George Durrant. I then accepted a transfer to Farmington, New Mexico to coordinate the Indian and regular early-morning seminary programs functioning in that area. I was privileged to meet a good number of Indian Seminary students and see them grow spiritually.
